Availability?
Hey folks,
I live in the chicagoland area and I went to a local dealer to test drive a new 2012 Trail Edition.
I never drove the truck b4 and I figured I would go drive it as I will be looking for an off road capable truck in 2013.
I loved the truck but what I am posting about is what the salesman told me.....
He said the midwest really doesnt have an allocation for Trail Edition models and the one he has is like only 2 they have had on the lot.
I asked him abt ordering 13 and he said the last one they ordered took 8 months to deliver.
I told him I thought that was weird as most car companies build and deliver wherever. He agreed but said that is the case in the midwest when trying to get a Trail Edition. He said the TE is regional to the Western mountainous states.
Is that true? 8 months? I told him a few ppl have ordered 13s and they were expected in a month. He said not in the midwest.
8 months might actually work out fine for me, but I wonder if thats true....

Call some other dealers...
Some dealers are straight shooters, some not so much. The tendency by most is to sell what they have, or have coming. Toyota distribution in the US is by regions, so some of what he says is valid.

Yes, he was being truthful. Toyota decided that they were not going to sell the Trail Edition in the midwest. My local dealer in STL took six months to order mine and when it did finally come in it was the wrong color (and they upped the price). I ended up getting mine in Denver at a lower price than the STL dealer originally agreed upon.

How do they up the price when you have a bill of sale or documentation of a down payment and an agreed upon price in writing?
Im assuming it was in writing otherwise I dont think they would order it.
Thats crappy of them.

They return your deposit, cancel the deal - whatta ya gonna do... sue them?
Not likely, and they know it. Supply and demand + marginal ethics.

One other option is to look at the western states for a Trail, do an internet search and then get quotes, then when you are ready to pull the plug buy a one way ticket and have a great road trip in your new ride.

In TX we get our 4Runners through the Gulf States Toyota distributor (TX, LA, OK, AR, MS). A quick search of their inventory shows 3 TE's in stock...not sure where they are but you can do an online request for more information if interested...

I was surprised the salesman didnt push me to buy the one he had.
I told him I loved the truck and they had an internet price 3k off sticker.
I did mention to him that I wanted KDSS (a must) and that I wasnt ready to buy today. That usually doesnt stop them. He was very non pushy and accommodating so when I do order if its a good price, Ill give him a shot.
He had a real nice Sequoia on the floor. A used 2012 with 13k miles they were asking 40k for. Looked like a good deal esp considering sticker on a new one and if you could negotiate a little.

Yes, it was in writing, but, I wanted the Salsa Red and they got a Mag Gray. I might have taken the Mag Gray if they hadn't bumped the price.
Anyway, if you're in the Chicago, KansasCity, or Gulf States sales regions, you're going to have a hard time getting one.
The toyota website has a "Build Your Own" configurator. Put in your zip code, and select the model, trim level etc. to get a list price. I don't know if it has changed or not, but when I bought mine if you put in a zip code from one of those regions the Trail Edition didn't even show up as an option. Their website showed the Trail, but it wasn't there in the configurator. If you put in a zip code from one of the other regions, the configurator had the Trail. That was just Toyota's way of telling you they weren't selling it in the midwest.

NC is telling me the same thing. Three dealerships have told me there will be none allocated for sale in NC for 2013. Weak sauce.

I'm up North in Wisconsin, and yet to see a Trail Edition on a lot. Or even the street for that matter!
