TE KDSS question...

Ok, so I am currently a 3rd gen owner, but I've stumbled across a very nice, certified preowned '11 TE that I'm looking at as a more family and wallet friendly (in the long run) vehicle. My question is this...they don't have it advertised as KDSS equipped, but it has the controls up in the overhead console. Does this mean that it is in fact equipped?

Negative. Up top is the Multiterrain select, Crawl Control, A-Trac, Hill Assist, and Rear diff locker. KDSS is part of the suspension and has no buttons or nobs. If it doesn't have KDSS I'd pass believe it or not as it is worth it on road and offroad.

How would I be able to tell if it had it?

Also, if I plan on eventually upgrading the susp., is it really still that worth it?

The easiest way to tell is to look under the front end. Look for a thick swaybar that attaches to the front lower control arms. The non-KDSS swaybar attaches to the spindle.

The KDSS will work the exact same whether lifted or not. So, having it lifted will not take away the benefits of KDSS.

KDSS allows a thicker swaybar, so it improves on-road handling. It's off-road benefits are debatable.

A good quality lift and LT tires will improve the handling to the point that I don't think KDSS is a must-have. KDSS also reduces ground clearance. BUT, it might improve resale and I'm sure KDSS plus a lift would handle awesome on the street. It just depends if you want to pay for it (on the purchase price and possible repairs later).

Huh, good to know. This leads me to my next questions: is KDSS really that worth it? How does it effect the handling characteristics of the truck? I'm more into the exploration aspect of offroading, nothing too gnarly. Finally, what would y'all consider paying for an '11 TE, salsa red, 30300 miles, good shape, just a few scrapes here and there, no nav. It's in Colorado springs so I know 4x4's go for a bit higher than in some other corners of the country. They're asking $35k which I know is a bit high and I'm pretty sure they (the dealership)probably payed in the ballpark of $28k for it.

OP,

As another has already stated, there is no knob, badge, or indications of KDSS in the interior, only exterior from below can you tell. If you are still interested in KDSS (I personally would only buy a TE with it), NY2LA has a nice pictorial shot on what to look for below the rig to verify it is equip with KDSS: click here

Edmunds says $31,700 I always liked this tool.

Thank you for the link! Dealership is closed today but I'll swing by on my way home from work and check under.
I got the same findings on price, but while it is certified preowned, it does have a small but noticeable dent in the driver door as well as a small hole in the black plastic of the rear bumper. I'm hoping to be able to get them down to $30k

I remember seeing a utube or other small video which explains how KDSS works. It was very instructive. You might want to check the Toyota site, it might be there. Be safe.

Not sure if you only get the Multi-terrain select on KDSS equipped vehicles or not but if you do I highly suggest it. It allows you to adjust how much the front wheels slip, its almost like having a front locker but not quite. If you watch my front tires in the video I posted you can see what I mean. I have it set at mogul and the tires "almost" spin as if locked. I would get it for that alone.
