2013 4Runner EPA mpg rating lower than 2010-2012 4Runner?

Does anyone know why the 2013 4Runner's EPA mpg rating fell to 17 city, 21 highway, 18 combined, from the 2010-2012 4Runner's EPA mpg rating of 17 city, 22 highway, 19 combined?

Did Toyota strengthen the 2013 4Runner's roof, increasing vehicle weight, in order to get a higher score on the IIHS rollover test? The 2010-2012 4Runner received an Acceptable score, which kept it from being named a Top Safety Pick.

Changed testing parameters. Still not real world applicable.

I picked up my 2013 SR5 on Tuesday...

I saw as high as 25 mpg on the highway, and more commonly 23 mpg...

Not driving hard but not driving like a granny in all city is showing 18.1 mpg.

I feel like Toyota is overly conservative on mpg ratings. We drove a 2012 Camry 4 cylinder from Chicago back to Kansas City and we peaked at 43 mpg highway going 55mph and saw a more common 39 mpg a majority of the trip. The 2012 Camry 4 cylinder is I believe rated at 35 mpg highway.

Were all 3 trim levels, average mpg ratings affected? And if so,who's supplying the Tires to Toyota for the 2013's??

When I bought my 4Runner the sales guy said that Toyota always under states their milage rating which at the time I thought was just salesman BS. Then I started tracking it and I was quite surprised to be getting 24-26MPG highway. Of course that was before I started modding it. Now I'm getting about 19mpg highway.

My 13' SR5 has Bridgestone tires.

Thw 2012 Camry is under-rated also... we saw 39mpg highway from Chicago to KC. Toyota rates it at 35mpg highway.

I was asking myself the same question today.

And for those asking, my 2013 limited came with geolandars, AFAIK same as previous years.

Even the canadian ratings are higher on the 2013 than 2010-2012.

1engineer, you are stating that only parameters changed, I think you may be right, do you have any link or reference to this?

Mpg

It is not Toyota that posts the miles per gallon on the window sticker. It is done by the EPA and is based on a formula and not actual on the road driving. I have owned 12 Toyota's and 3 Lexus vehicles and they all got better mileage than the window sticker suggested.

Ok diverscale,

If that's the case, then my next, Brilliant theory (high friction rubber), will be saved til' another day, for a different question, lol!

But due to the fact that the numbers are really so very simular, it's probably more to do with the conditions, under which the vehicals were tested, as opposed to an engineering implementation.

2013 Toyota 4Runner SUV models and prices

SR5 and LE are still rated at 22 hwy. The TE is rated at 21 hwy. Odd. Aerodynamics making up the difference?

I think so Quintin. It could be as slight as 21.4 mpg vs 21.6 mpg though. No front air deflector lol.

Diverscale, I made a mistake. CAFE standards changed between 2011 and 2012. EPA efficiency testing data changed after 2008. Detailed data and test procedures can be found at Detailed Test Information

I think though even though test procedures changed in 2008 every vehicle was not reevaluated at that time.

The biggest take away here is for some the Monroney sticker (what is on a new car window that has these numbers and named after senator Mike Monroney) will be dead on because EPA test parameters coincide with your driving habits and location. For example, you live and drive in a flat area with no snow. For others it will be worse because you live in the mountains or you drive like John Force from stoplights. Also almost any external mod from stock will change your average mpg, usually for the worse. Again, sorry for the mistake. I make 'em all the time just ask my wife lol!
