Anyone else running 17x9 on 285s?
So I recently got the Konig Six shooters ~ 17x9 0 offset. This weekend I met up with some IL people at the midwest Toyota Jamboree. Noone aired down, I aired down to 25 psi (normally air down to 16 psi on my countersteer x's). We were crawling very muddy slippery rocks and ledges. I came up on hill with a boulder to the right, made it up the hill until my right rear passenger tire had slipped and the tire became unseated for a few minutes. After freaking out for about 5 minutes, I proceeded to get the hi-lift out and begin changing it out. I had to move my truck to a dry spot, as I did, it reseated.
Anyone else run into this problem? Normal hwy driving is fine, I'm wandering if it was a mounting issue or was it my fault in the first place to think a 285 was wide enough for a 17x9? One of the guys there had the same wheels on his FJ, he was running 315s and told me I need atleast a 295 for these wheels.

I think Keemorunnin has 285s on a 9" wide wheel. I've wheeled with him a couple times and he didn't have issues while aired down (don't know what he aired down to) but we were in dry, dirt and rocky terrain.
Aren't the Countersteer X an 8.5" width? I wouldn't think a half inch increase would make a difference and cause the tire to unseat.
FWIW, I have had no issues with the 295s on my 9" wide wheels. The lowest I've aired down to was 18psi.

The countersteers are 17x8 -10 offset. I may have to just do a 305/70/17, the only real 295s I like are the trail grapplers.

Trust me, I do want 315s lol. Will they fit? I have no clue lol. I remember Harper did 305 km2s on his 17x8s, so I think thats what I'll do, but in the goodyear duratrac kevlars.

With my 305/70/17's (34's) on my Konig X's(only 8"wide,not 9) I rubbed big time in the rear wheel well fender lips when fully stuffed. Chewed up the outside lugs on the rear tires pretty good in Ouray.Pretty much restricted my offroading there as I had to watch not to stuff the rear wheels and the reason I didn't go to Moab ....No es bueno!lol
Never rubbed at all with 305/65/17's(32.8')on the Konigs, so an inch+ bigger tire made a big difference.
Talked to the TRD chief engineer in Ouray and showed him my damage and he said it was because of the .4 offset of the X's plus the 34" tires.
35's would have trashed the fenders or blew the tires.
He said the Fuel wheels they ran in the Baja 1000 were custom 8 inch wide with a 4.75 or 5.0 backspace(+6 offset) so they wouldn't hit the rear fenders .
I recently put on Metaltech 2 inch bumpstop extenders in the rear for at least a temporary fix. Limits the up travel by 2 inches so it won't rub .
This is pic, stuffed(against the bumpstop)with a 305/65/17 KM2 and a 8" wide Mojave with 4.5" backspace (0 offset) and you can see how close it is.The other side is at full extension running extended travel Icon piggyback shocks.

Thank you sir for sharing that info!
So you're saying its not a good idea for my setup to run a 305? The wheels have 5in back spacing and a 0 offset. I guess I could just run a 295 and call it a day.

Are you not rubbing the UCAs with a 5" backspace? Are you still running the spidertrax?

I've got to resurrect this thread because I don't think we ever got a clear answer regarding the 285s/ wheel width issue. I'm about to order some wheels and several options are 8.5-9" wide. Is that a bad idea with 285s? Should I go 8" wide max if I want the option of running low psi?
