Just a FYI for those curious about 4Runner sales. Projected sales for 2012 using simple projections will be around 50,000. Enjoy!

Interesting curve. Newness wore off, then took off again.

I would have to bet that tsunami kinda hurt 2011 a bit.

Sales are 50% of what they were 15 years ago.

Only thing constant in life is change. Popularity of vehicles is one of those things.

The tsunami hit in March 2011. I would say Toyota already had between 60-90 day inventory in the pipeline or on the water. The numbers fit.

Interesting to see how the sales numbers are compared to the 4th gen 4runner in 03, 04, and 05.

Which sold more?

It would be cool if the report divided by model.

My TE amazes me more everyday. Toyota hit a home run with this vehicle.

But keep in mind gas prices were also a lot less expensive back then as well.
And the Highlander was not yet SUVized back in those days. It rode lower comparatively and felt more like a forester than a bonafide family hauler. The current Highlander is a better car for most folks... just not us.

Another thing to consider is that there are very few body-on-frame, true 4wd SUVs available today compared to 10 years ago. Most of them are gone now or turned into "softroaders". If you think about it that way, the 4Runner should have a huge advantage for people who still want to buy a new body-on-frame SUV with a true 4wd system. What's left out there these days? Maybe the Jeep Wrangler & the Nissan Xterra? And I think the Xterra is due to be replaced soon.
Customers, and their desires, are what have changed over the years. Vehicles change because the customers drive the change, not the other way around. Now, what changes the customers? Everything. Social issues, age, education, disposable income, colors, environment, religion etc. I think personally peer pressure, even among adults, is the biggest driver of change. Your friend that is highly educated and that you respect says he is buying a Prius because X, Y, and Z. You listen and other friends listen and eventually you get a little Prius colony going in your town. Same goes with fashion, religion and all other social issues that I don't understand because people are hard to figure out. I like machines.

I believe the Trail Edition total Production was less than 4% of all 4Runners each year.

Yearly total = approx 1700- 2000 trail models. That's pretty low. More rare than a Shelby GT500 or many other low production vehicles.
