Gas tank

How much gallons can the 4R hold? I thought I read someone said 23 but I filled the tank for the first time and it was 19.

Manual says 23, but I'm sure your tank wasn't completely bone dry when you filled it. The gas light comes on when there's still 2-3 gallons left in the tank.

According to the comp, there was 15 miles before "empty". Gas light was on.

They understate the miles until empty, much like lots of other manufacturers. I guess you could say they err on the side of caution, so you don't run out of gas when it still says you have mileage left. And those aren't the most precise measuring instruments/computers.

I've driven around with the gas light on and zero showing on the mileage left. For 20 miles.

I have driven a good long ways when the range said 0 and the empty light was on for a long time.

Yes, the tank holds 23 gals. The miles left is a guestimate based on mileage. Just go by the fuel gauge like we always used to do until the cars got 'smart'.

I drove about 10 miles after the gas light came on so I figured it was time to fill up. I'm still getting used to the 4R so I was just being cautious. On my Tacoma though, I can drive it til it's running on fumes and not be worried cause I know it still has a few mile left!

You haven't said what year, how many miles you have on it and how many miles it had when you picked it up.

The T4R learns driving style and some other info that does NOT get reset by disconnecting the battery. If it was used as a demo, it might have learned something that is giving an early low fuel indicator. So the first thing to try is disconnecting the battery for 5-10 minutes then see when the low-fuel turns on. If that doesn't do it, stop by the dealer tell them your concern and ask them to reset the computer's long term settings.

I think there is a way for you to reset it but I can't remember how and haven't been able to find it searching here. Maybe someone else here can find the posting that explains how to reset all learned info.

Oh sorry. It's a 2013, picked up nov.1 with one mile on it. Filled it up today at 364 miles. It's really not a concern, just was wondering.

It holds 23 gallons but about 21 useable with 2 gallons left when it reads zero miles. But,you shouldn't really let it get past zero if you can help it as the electric fuel pump is cooled by the fuel and heat could shorten it's life.

That being said I thought for sure I was going to run out of gas one time travelling thru west Texas when a gas station closed real early and had to stretch it to the next exit. I was hyper mileing going 50mph for 40 miles after it hit zero before I got to the next gas station. When I filled up, it took 22.79 gallons!Had to be running on fumes!

Hi waltuo,

Like you, I was already sure that tank was 23 gal cap. But to be absolutely sure,
I just did the math just to confirm it.

Now, reg gas at the pump here in NJ is about $3.56 per gal avg. And, it cost me about $82 bucks to fill-up each time I pull up to the pump; depending on how low I let it go...try not to let it go that close to empty.

So, $82 dollars divided by $3.56/gal = .(23)0337!!! There you go!!!!

That's one record.. Wonder what others are out there. I'm thinking 25 miles is the most you can go on reserve.

22.82 gallons.

That's how much I siphoned out of one I followed home from the gas station last week.
