How Hard is It to Get a Dealer to Upgrade Tires on a New TE Purchase?
I'm not wanting to wait to use up my factory set when I get them or to bother with the process of selling them off. Anybody had luck getting a dealer to upgrade from OEM tires to Duratracs (or similar) when they bought their new 4Runner? And if so, how much more did it cost?

The best and only way to do this is make is part of the deal for the car.... When you get them close to what you are willing to pay say " I will do the deal if you swap the tires to xxxxx.... I was a General Sales manager for 15 years and been out of the business for 10 years. Recently did this for my 2013 LTD and they swapped to Michelin 275 55 20 incl labor.
Another tip is take invoice which is easy to find and deduct HOLDBACK (extra money from Toyota to dealer for advertising etc) which is $940 on a avg LTD to get pure cost and go from there.

While it might be the best way, it is certainly not the only way. In addition to trying to negotiate that swap with the dealer at the time of purchase, I would go to your favorite tire store(s) in your area. Tell them your plans and ask them what they would give you in trade on the best deal on the tires you want. Tell them you will drive from the dealership to their store on the day of purchase and with that, what is their bottom line. From that figure, you can then tell if you are getting a better deal from the dealer or not.....be safe.

Why would want to finance 4 tires even partially for several years? Poor decision financially. You could have the tires worn out and still be paying for them.

Well, I will be financing 4 tires either way. I'm hoping to avoid financing 4, then paying cash for 4 more then selling 4 for less cash.

No you are financing OEM tires for "X" now you will be financing tires for "X" + "Y". Go ahead and figure out what $500 financed over four or five years at even a few percent will cost. Its your money but by reading your other thread it sounds like you want to get by as cheap as possible and this way is not it. Good luck.

Very easy to get most dealers to swap rubber for you. I was even able to get them to supply/install my lift and 285 Duratracs for free AND drop $3,000 off the sticker.

Get the 4Runner as cheap as you can. Then shop for tires/mods. All these guys posting up that they got X for "free" paid for it somewhere in the deal. If they let you drive off the lot with the vehicle that means they are making money.

your dealer will probably work with you and give you a deal on the new tires so the cost isn't exactly X+Y for your scenario; more like X+Y-Z. that said, it may be worth the minimal hassle to sell the takeoffs on Craigslist for a few hundred to defray the cost that much more.

This, exactly this. Every one of the (countless) "best price" threads should have this posted, then closed.
As to "Invoice", "dealer cost", etc etc, what a load. No business divulges their REAL costs to buyers. And, sorry, but those who believe it are, um, let's just say naive.
Heh, but the ploy works, don't it?

Sometimes, it's in a dealer's best interest to move as many cars as possible. By doing that, they'll get preferential treatment from the manufacturer over dealers who have sold less in terms of inventory. Like when the '14's hit the lots. Whoever sold the most 2012 and 2013 models will get the first shipments of 2014 models. And when only a few dealers have those models it's much easier to negotiate a higher price for the car on the dealers end.

I'd bet curious to see how much money they actually make off a car sale. Most people say they aren't making much but I know certain retail markets will mark the price up 100% or more.
