I actually like the sliding tray, but don't like that whatever I want secure in the back has to be tied down using the D-rings and baby seat anchors. So I came up with a nice cheap easy way to hold stuff down and still be able to slide the tray in and out. I don't think its good for extremely heavy stuff, but it works fine for my box of tricks and whatever other nonsense I don't want moving around back there. Here's what I did-

I cut some lengths of one inch tubular webbing and added grommets. I like tubular webbing because its strong and is made to stay the same length and keep its strength when wet.



Then I went to the hardware store and picked up some 1/4" x2" clevis pins, washers, and appropriately sized cotter pins. I also got some 1.5" steel rings. This is what the assembled unit looks like-



I drilled holes where I wanted the straps. The tray is basically a piece of foam bolted to some sliding tracks. It drilled like butter, but threw foam bits everywhere. Vacuum time! I dropped a clevis pin into the hole on top of a washer, then attached the webbing via both grommets, with the ring in the middle, and secured it with a cotter pin.





I attached the webbing at the bottom for a few reasons- the turns the webbing makes to pull upward from the bottom takes strain off the anchor point, the webbing itself and the cotter pin. It also looks a lot neater.

I used clevis and cotter pins instead of nuts and bolts just for the novelty. And it comes apart in seconds if I ever need to disassemble it.

I then made some slits in my Husky cargo liner (I actually made the slits before I assembled the tie downs and threaded the ring through then.) Doing this allows me to use the tie downs without flattening the liner, and the slits are high enough that liquid will not escape and ruin my carpeting. There is frequently mud and seawater in the back of my truck. The cargo liner is a lifesaver! Assembled this way it also keeps the liner itself from sliding around.

I stretched some 24" bungee cords (not pictured, I bought them tonight) across the cargo area between rings. I can also use ratcheting straps for larger things. The two most forward straps are not through the liner because they are going to hold down the box of crap I keep back there.





So there you have it. I'm not a modding genius, but this works out very well for my purposes, and I figured I'd share.

That's pretty cool. It looks like this will solve the issue of stuff sliding off up there by the rear of the back seats as well. Looks like the whole cargo cover will slide out and then over the top of that little shelf area.

Great mod! I may try this, but before I do, I wanted to see if anyone had thoughts on these as an option:

The concern is that I’m not sure how sturdy that cargo tray itself is for these screws, but I’m tempted to toss 4-6 of these in various spots on the cargo tray.
