2013 Desert Rendezvous
Per the Expedition Portal:
At a "secret" location deep in the Mojave Desert, East of the Salton Sea, 100+ overlanders gathered to share stories, have new adventures and remove waste from the natural landscape. The FREE family & pet friendly gathering is known as the Desert Rendezvous, and is now in its 3rd year. Organized by TACODOC and his conspirators, the gathering brings together the southwest overland community for a weekend of fun in the desert.
2013 Desert Rendezvous
The Salton Sea is one of the places I'd like to to drive out to one day... this sounds like a fun gathering.

I think you would have a great time. You could also go to Death Valley (lowest spot in the continental US) Mojave National preserve (off road camping, lava tubes and nice hiking trails) and Joshua Tree National Park (rock climbing, off road and hiking). Salton Sea is a cool place to see, not as much to do as the in between stuff. I'm going down there the week of the 13th and it should be fun.
Bring you own trash bags, there is enough litter for everyone.

Depending on what way the wind is blowing you will not stay at the Salton sea long. All that stagnant salt water has a very strong dead fish smell to it. I could not believe people would want to live near it the first time I was there. Now we just take a look and get out of there.

The dead fish smell is from hundreds of dead fish. You don't want to be around the Salton Sea in the summer months unless you're upwind. Trust me.

It wasn't always like that... some 60 years ago it was a (short lived) California riviera.

Those are some cool photos. From what I have heard it was the Hoover dam and other dams on the Colorado river the cause the lake to die. It used to get fresh water from the river flooding at times but after the dams there were no more floods.
