key FOB or Electric emergency

I don't have the luxury of searching since I'm not in front of the computer.

Right before we left to church this morning I went to unlock the car and it did not work.

Now, I recently had trouble with the battery as I have previously posted.
At first the battery tested fine but tested it again and I ha a bad battery.
So I gotta a Costco battery and replaced it yesterday.

I turned on the truck, it fired up and turned off instantly.
I gave it a second and fired it up again and it worked fine and through out the day. I returned the old battery and asked the manager at Costco and asked him about what happened. He said the fuel pump might have intially failed due to the battery being disconnected for the hour, and not to worry about it.

Fast forward to today, I don't know whether the key fob is bad or I have an electric problem.

1. How long is the battery life expectancy on the key fobs? 4 years?
More?

2. Can it be that the battery not have enough charge to power the security system , but enough power to turn on lights?

I say that because I took out the key and manually opened the door, was able to turn on the headlights.

3. How do I turn on the car, bypassing the push start? Or is that not possible?

4. Where can I get the battery replaced on the key fob?
Yes I know the dealer, it's Sunday, service is closed >: (

Frustrating morning ...

1. I think the manual says 2 years on battery life and it is easily changed without having to go to the dealer. It uses a CR1632 that can be found at Radio Shack and other stores.

2. I have not tried this, but the manual also says with the doors closed, hold the Toyota emblem on the key fob against the start button, and then press the start button within 10 seconds to manually start.

Hey Danny, don't worry about the 1st stall right after changing the battery, that's normal for the smart key type vehicles, my old car used to do that too after the battery had been disconnected.

The key fob battery's usually last ~3 years or so with moderate use, but really it all depends on how much you use it, so I like to change it every other year just in case.

Are you having trouble starting right now? Or are you just worried that the fob might be low on battery?

Even if the battery dies in the fob you can still manually start the car by holding the fob up to the push to start button. This will manually engage the transponder and you can start your vehicle with a dead key fob.

Here's a screen shot from the manual about exactly how to start it in case you are still stuck. Oh yeah and the battery size is CR1632, I had a lot of trouble finding it locally so I just ordered a bunch online, but I think possibly a Radio Shack might have it. I have an extra battery sitting here, so if you want to buy me a plane ticket, I'll be there in a few hours, lol. Hope you figure it out, don't let it ruin your day

@eddiebx and @dhylander thank you!

I figured out how to open the FOB and went down to Autozone, replaced the battery, went home and everything worked fine!

I was just concerned because the car started up and shut down right away yesterday.

"Hey Danny, don't worry about the 1st stall right after changing the battery, that's normal for the smart key type vehicles, my old car used to do that too after the battery had been disconnected."

Why does that happen?!!!

2011 limited here and I just replaced the FOB batteries last week. My truck did give me one beep every time I opened the door which I never remembered it doing before but since I usually don't pay that much attention to such things I did not give it a second thought.

Well, last week the truck would not start so I changed the battery. And guess what, no more beep.

And yes, the truck will die once after reconnecting the battery. It's normal and even in the manual, I think. But I don't know why. Nor do I know why I always forget about it and panic after it happens

You replaced the battery in the truck then when you started it the truck immediately died? Normal.

You tried to open the door but the battery in the fob was dead so you used the E-key to open the door? Hold Toyota logo to start button, press and hold start button for, IIRC, 10 seconds to start engine.

Two different battery problems I assume as your OP is a bit confusing

I never heard such a beep and was driving it all day yesterday after replacing car battery..

I didn't realize the key FOB batteries die so quickly. My Camry alarm battery has been the original since 2002 ... But I guess as my wife put it "this one has higher technology"

That's why I didn't think it was a FOB issue.

It's confusing because I was confused lol... I didn't know which was the problem, but it happened overnight of changing the truck battery..... It was just a strange coincidence and I didn't think it was a coincidence, I thought something could be wrong with the electric system

I now know to try the manual start next time, if you can call it that.

All good now...

My story with the beep was referring to changing the fob battery, not the truck battery.

I got you, I never heard a beep from my key fob or the truck before the Key FOB battery suddenly ran out.

Usually the range gets shorter when car alarm FOB batteries die over time, this was just sudden.

BTW - For everyone else out there, if you ever have to change out the key fob battery.. It's much easier after you take out the Door Key from the device.

Wow these things are really on the 2 year mark.
The low battery indicator is starting to flash.

Where is the best deal for the batteries? Amazon?

I just saw that, thanks.

Edit, there are 5 for $6, Panasonic, which is the battery in the key FOB from the dealership. I know this because I just pulled it out from the spare this morning that's never been changed.

Edit 2 - the above link, the reviews say the batteries didn't last long.

Found this

I got mine from Amazon, you do have to be careful there, I've gotten garbage batteries from them before. Read the reviews, usually that flesh out the crappy battery sellers.

Smart key issue

All I have a problem with my smart key fobs and my 2010 4runner limited. The truck starts fine but the key fob will not actuate locks and remote start. Also the truck beeps when I get out. Lastly the doors will only lock if I use the auxiliary key. I try to push button on the truck and they auto unlock
