'11 5th Gen 30K Svc - Do's/Don't
Ok, let me start saying that yes, I searched the Forum for about an HR for the answer b4 I posted this. I found nothing specific to the 5th Gen, hence the post.
Went to my local Stealership and got the print out for the 30K Service and this is what I was quoted for roughly $260 bucks. Obviously some of this is DIY but I'd like a 2nd/3rd/4th/Umpteenth opinion on the matter/service so I can save some $$$. I'm a baller on a budget.

Knock out an oil change, replace your air filter if it needs it. Replace the cabin filter - should be simple - 4th gens were stupid easy. Rotate your own tires. You should be able to do it for less than $100. Paypal me $50 gift to feel better about parting with your money, [email protected] Wait for dealer to send you "free 21 point inspection" coupon or similar. They'll check the same stuff as they would in the service. Don't get me wrong - if I had the money, I'd have a dealer do everything to my truck but I don't so I do it all myself.

Do what ever you know how and have the proper tools to do at home. I replaced all of my own air filters, lubed my joints, rotated and balanced my tires (free for me at Discount Tire) etc. I could have changed my own oil, but just didn't have the time. I also purchased my own fluids and provided them for the service as I figured it was going to cost me either way, might as well provide them with the good stuff to do it right (and probably for less money)

I just did my 30k service last week. It involved a $60 oil change at the dealer and $25 off Amazon for both the air and cabin air filter which took all of three minutes to change out. I just had new tires installed 2k miles ago so no need for rotation, but I'm like you and couldn't justify wasting money that could have been easily saved.

When the dealer says "inspect" they mean the tech might look for stuff falling off the truck or dripping out when it's up on the lift. I guarantee they spend more time filling out their checklist than actually doing those "inspections". I do my maintenance myself because I simply don't trust the service techs. My dealer charges $70 for an OC and I've told him I would gladly pay them $100 for an oil change and lube if I was confident the work was being performed and the correct fluids/parts were being used.

Valid point about the Fluids but here's a two-part question....other than the replacement oil (synthetic), what other fluids may I need to be concerned w/? Whats some recommendation for good Oil Brands/ManFctr?
Also, thanks guy for chiming in. My first YOTA and just trying to make sure I do her right.

The two air filters are stupid simple to change. I was surprised at how dirty my cabin filter was. There was a thread about where to buy filters.

Dealers don't "inspect" shit.
I had an "all green" inspection chart come back on a truck that had no washer fluid and ragged wipers.

That's unfortunate truth sometime.

Even if you do get a dealer tech that "inspects fluids" most of it is just seeing if the fluid is between the min and max. If you look up the procedure for inspecting your transmission fluid, it is basically just making there isn't ATF dripping from your transmission.....
The techs make their money by job, so it is within their best interest to complete your service as quickly as possible, which means skipping steps, and not really inspecting anything. They just do the bare minimum necessary to get you out the door.

As far as brands, its all personal preference. I typically use Royal Purple and/or Mobile 1. They do engine oil, transfer case, differentials and maybe A/T (I don't recall. I supplied them with engine, transfer case and diffs.

Unfortunately this is how it is in general... the "techs" that "inspect" the vehicle are mainly underpaid, overworked, and under educated "lube techs" who are paid hourly, but often over worked that they have to rush vehicles regularly (as is the case at our dealership and other dealerships.) Lube techs in general (and I mean no offense by this, its just what it is) are lowest paid, lowest educated technicans at the dealership. Many lube techs don't know much about cars at all (though many are often trying and/or training at the same time) but are for the most part not really "qualified" to properly inspect the vehicle.
What I mean by that is, that many lube techs wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a cracked/worn drivebelt, worn brake fluid, leaking timing chain tensioner, ect ect. That combined by the fact that many are forced to rush the oil changes and minor services and often skip large portions of the inspection sheets leads to very poor quality control... which is ridiculous since many technicans depend on the upsells from those inspections to make money.
Its just another example of corporate mis-management and backwards thinking; sort of stepping over a dollar to save a dime mentality that large corporations have gotten into.
