I checked the sticker and under "Standard Equipment , Exterior"..it says "Chrome Roof Rails" and no other mention of the rack at all. So, I guess they are not supposed to be on mine. Personally, I think this a cheap, somewhat shady move on Toyota's part to install the rack, but force the customer to spend extra money to use it.

I'm sorry you didn't get the rails...

I think it would be shady for Toyota to force EVERYONE to pay $200 more for something they may not use. It would have been like throwing money out the door for me!

Keep an eye out in the 5th Gen classified section. Someone is always selling cross-rails cheap. Good luck.

If your going to put large items up there, sheet of ply etc. I'd recommend aftermarket, something that will bring your load above the small antenna on the back. With the factory cross rails it won't last long.

Try Rhino Rack. Good design, lifetime warranty and you can remove them when not in use much easier than factory cross bars.

I think part of the reason they are not standard equipment is to increase MPG's.

Actually I'm glad that Toyota didn't make me to pay for the crossbars. Neither my canoe nor my 2 kayaks don't fit factory crossbars, I need minimum 58 inches ones. By the way if you are going to carry stuff on crossbars I recommend to get Yakima or Thule - they stronger and can carry more weight.

The Thule or Yakama are better. I do have a pair of the stock ones sitting in the garage. I'd be willing to part with them for 50% of what the dealer will sell them to you (plus shipping). However, the Thule or yakama crossbars are much beefier, can be put on factory rails and ca be removed if you want to reduce wind noise or any other reason. Don't know how big of a deal they really are for MPG but I'm sure there might be some slight difference. I did too much to mine to be able to pinpoint what caused which portion of the decreases (I don't care).

Agree with the above. Yakima/Thule bars are better. They also have "Whispbars" now that are more aerodynamic, but are still stronger than the OEM bars.

I certainly appreciate the offer, but I can get them brand new on Amazon for $100.

Cross Bars for 2010-2012 SR5 and Limited Toyota 4Runner Roof Rack-NEW OEM : Amazon.com : Automotive

I don't have anything specfic that I want to haul on the roof of the truck. I really just want the abilty to do so. I recently sold my old Chevy truck and when my wife asked what we would do about a Xmass tree this year, I told her it would go on top of the 4runner. That got me thinking about the rack, etc.. Im sure a factory rack would be more than enough for my needs.
