Understand that in MO we don’t pay sales tax at the dealer. I still have to write that check. 😡 Even so, this price was +$2000 cheaper than anything I could find locally.

I feel like it was very fair considering what I wanted was very specific and GS is a pita to deal with.

Congrats!

Have been looking at Pre-owned but with the 2019 prices so low i'm considering shelling out the extra...its a different ballgame buying new vs used so if someone can check out my math that'd be great. This would be my first time ever buying a new car.

For a 2019 TRD Off Road
MSRP - $39,545.
18-20% - $31,636 to $32,427
Adding 9% tax and about $699 of doc fees.

My OTD price should be at $35,182 - $36,044.

Im also reading I should only pay $199-$299 for doc fees. Is that realistic? I know most of their doc fee is BS.

Also, I had planned on paying cash. Does that make any difference vs financing through them as far as negotiating price?

Also, where does the value of 18-20% off MSRP of a 2019 vehicle in 2020 come from? Just curious as to how someone came up with this number to shoot for.

I think your numbers look good. Like death and taxes, I do not think you'll be able to avoid the doc fee. You might want to find a dealer that has a lower doc fee. But on the other hand, if they'll do 20% off of MSRP, I'd probably just accept their fee and close the deal.

In terms of cash vs. financing, dealers do make a little money when you finance through them (it's called the "reserve"). I would just tell them that you'd be happy to finance a portion of the vehicle cost if it helps get you to the 20% off of MSRP mark.

Also, since we're getting close to the end of the month here, and there are a lot of 2019 4Runners still out there, and the 2020's are hitting the lots, you might want to make the 20% offer to several dealers in and around your area. Most will probably not do 20% off, but you never know, you might find a dealer on the 30th or 31st of the month that is getting a little desperate to hit their month-end numbers, and as a result, would be willing to take a small loss on a 2019, so that they can get their larger factory-to-dealer rebate for selling 'x' number of vehicles for the month. This strategy has worked for me in the past.

Hope this helps!

Sure, this is purely a data-driven number. Let me explain further...

One advantage around buying a late model vehicle is the fact that there is data out there already around resale values, which means you'll know what the fair value of the vehicle truly is. There are many sites out there that provide resale values, such as Kelly Blue Book, Edmunds, etc.

With this in mind, you should "run the numbers" to find the resale value for the 4Runner that you want to buy, with only say 50 miles on it. Run the numbers for both Private Party resale and Trade In value, in "Very Good" condition. As all dealers will tell you, absolutely no vehicle is in "Excellent" condition, so you should not select "Excellent" condition. I usually like to be right around Private Party resale, in "Very Good" condition. This way, the moment you drive it off the lot, you should have pretty good confidence that in the event of an emergency, you could probably sell your 4Runner the very next day, and get most, if not all, of your money back :-)

Bottom line, for me, it's all about the data and resale value, so that I know with a high level of confidence that I bought a vehicle for truly what the market says it worth. This strategy has paid off pretty well for me over the years, and I've typically been able to be around $200-$300 in monthly depreciation for all my vehicles (I've owned over 40 vehicles, all bought brand new, sell within 1 year of purchase, never put one red cent into them for maintenance, tires, brakes, etc.), from the moment I buy them, to the moment I sell them (I never trade-in, and always sell Private Party), and I typically never finance (unless it helps to get a better deal, and then I pay it off immediately, within 1 month). I'm comfortable driving a brand new $50k vehicle for only $200-$300 a month each year :-). For me, it's a bit of a hobby.

I know some people may find this as a waste of money, and my reply would be this: Think about the last time you bought and sold a vehicle, and calculate the difference between your buy price and sell price (or trade-in, if you traded in), and also add any money you spent on maintenance, and then divide that number by the number of months you owned the vehicle. If I had to guess, that number would be more than $200-$300 per month.

Also, last point, in the state of Missouri, we pay taxes only on the difference between the new car price, and the price of the vehicle sold, and we do not need to buy and trade-in with a dealer to get this tax advantage, since we pay our taxes at the DMV when we title our vehicles here. So, for example, say I bought a vehicle for $50k, and sold my other vehicle for $45k, I would pay taxes only on $5k, and NOT the full $50k. In this example, my tax bill would be only $400 (8% of $5k). This works for Private Party sales, too,

Hope this helps!

That’s an awesome tax break! But outside MO you would be getting hosed on taxes every year...6-7% tax on a 50k truck every year is an extra $250-$300/month which doubles your estimates. Or alternatively you could trade into the dealer for the tax break but you would probably take an even bigger hit there.

I just bought a TRD Off road with accessories of the front and rear mat package and exhaust. This was end of the year, so bare that in mind, but it was sticker 40,700 and I was out the door at 37,300 and they paid my last two lease payments ($890) and property tax (740) so I figured around $35,600.

Thoughts on this price?

In Southern CA
2020 SR5 4x4 w/ third row
MSRP: $41,707
Sale Price: $37,277.77
Tax: $2,745.05
Registration/Fees: $728.75
OTD: $40,751.57

Thoughts?

Based on reading only and not test drives, I'd like the KDSS option, but the 3rd row is more of a priority.

**Also, if anyone is looking for a TRD OR with KDSS in GA. PM me quickly. I know of two. One of which is from the great dealer I worked with that is willing to offer the same discount. The other you'll pay more but it is available at the moment. ** 29 JAN 2020

FINALLY found my 4runner in GA.

2019 TRD Off-Road (Black, Non-KDSS)
$41,385 MSRP
$33,220 Discounted Price
$36,423 OTD

Ive read quite a bit of this thread. Learned alot about the process, the numbers and the experiences many of you have been through. I think my experience was a culmination of many that I have read about here.

I started looking at 2014-2016 4Runner Trails about 3-4 months ago with the plan to stay under $30k. When I found out I was moving to Colorado, I made a decision to sell my motorcycle and put that money towards more 4Runner. Last week while looking, I found a brand new 2019 TRD Off-Road for CHEAPER than all the USED 2018 and 2019 models I had been looking at. That instantly sparked my drive to shoot for a new 2019 considering what I had read on this thread.

I started my search for a 2019 four nights ago. Over three of those days I found a total of seven vehicles, four regular TRD ORs and three TRD ORPs. These vehicles were spread out amongst GA, AL, FL, TN and LA. I decided to split them up, get the window stickers and initial OTD price from each dealer and move from there. Using the MSRPs from the window stickers I calculated two numbers; an 18% OTD price and a 20% OTD price. I started by hardballing the dealers with the 20% OTD price. The TRD ORP model proved to be outside of my range as none of the dealers would budge from sticker +TTL and fees.

Now that I was down to the final four and knowing it would be a TRD Off-Road, I compared all the details of the remaining vehicles.

-Dealership #1 offered an OTD price with 20% off MSRP before I could put the offer down.
-Dealership #2 sold the vehicle a day later.
-Dealership #3 was absolutely stubborn. Had no tact and was a poor salesman. He tried to sell me the vehicle at MSRP+Full Dealer Add ons+TTL and Fees repeatedly.
-Dealership #4, after telling them what #1 was offering me, told me that the number I gave them makes no sense and that it is impossible. Also telling me that I would be sorely disappointed when I showed up and their offer was not real, if I was not making it up in the first place.

Needless to say, I called dealership #1.

I wanted to do everything over the phone/e-mail due to my work schedule and the dealership being several hours away. They told me I had to physically be there to complete the deal. I'm not sure if this was a tactic or just the process. I made it work and showed up the next day. The 4Runner was real, the price was real and I was happy. I signed the paperwork and then ran into the next experience that INSTANTLY rung bells in my head.

Even though I was paying cash, I was taken to a backroom with the finance manager. He just happened to have a "new employee" in there to learn the ropes. The "new employee" was obviously not new and I believe was a supervisor to the "manager" in front of me. They spent about 20-30 minutes explaining all the extras they could provide....the cheapest option was an additional ~$4k and the highest was ~$6k more. These were apparently the best deals I would ever get and would not be offered again after I left.

I took me another 20-30 minutes of explaining that even if I wanted the extras (I didn't), my financial situation absolutely would not allow me to spend that much without leaving bills unpaid every month. It was amazing that as real and honest I was trying to be with them, they continued their tactic. They finally gave up. I signed the papers and drove away with my first new vehicle.

Honestly, the process was easier than I ever would have imagined. I learned that you really can get 20% off MSRP, you really can do most of the legwork without ever leaving home and that dealers really will try to drain you any chance they can.

Thanks to lonzwinery for the great info recently and to all the others that have posted their experience here.
