Need a favor - involves a tape measure

Hi folks,

Can anyone tell me the width between roof rails rails (outside of crossbar plate to outside of opposite end of crossbar plate) on the 5th Gen 4Runner?

What I am trying to understand is the width of the cross bars (not counting the portion that goes into the side-rails) to see if the 5th Gen will fit on 4th Gen Sport model.

Thanks for any advisement!

Just a quick measure (not real precise) I get about 40 inches at the front and about 38 and 1/2 inches in the back. That is the inside edge of the side rails that run longitudinal with the vehicle.

So the width is tapered from wider at the front and narrower at the back.

This is a 2012 Trail Edition. The Limited and SR5 may be different as the TE has different style roof rails.

Also, don't forget to take a look at the different end caps on the TE vs the SR5/LE crossbars...I think they are different, so they might attached differently at the rails.

Thanks, my 06' Sport is 40" symmetrical front rear, sou sounds like one bar might fit but the other might not.

I'm looking at adding a bar or two for rack support.

I've read on here that you can't buy the entire TE rack bar separately from the dealer, in that if you go order just the crossbar, it's not going to have the end caps that actually attaches to the rail. Your best bet might be to try looking into the SR5/LE crossbars (these come with the end caps that attach to the rail)...but a better question is why don't you just get the 06' crossbars, lol.

Why? Well I'm a cheap bugger. New pairs of 5th Gen crossbars are 110 bucks vs. something like 260 for the 4th Gen.

On the 4th Gen Sport the cross rails "look" identical in construction.

Anyway the only ones I have seen on Flea-bay are the 5th Gen and those have the rail lug ends on them, but if the length is wrong then there is no point.

Nothing I have to have, If I put a roof basket up I would like to spread the load over three or four bars.
