Apple CarPlay - Toyota a committed partner
Edit for Title: Stupid autocorrect. Apple CarPlay
With all of the interior mods towards the entune and head unit, Apple just announced CarPlay today. Toyota is on the list of committed partners and wondering if this will be a part of the future 4Runner generation. It looks awesome and could possibly blow Entune out of the water. Would be great to see if you could by a unit to replace the Entune.
Apple - CarPlay

Well anything would blow entune out of the water (Though for basic stuff it's been pretty good). Unfortnately... only for Apple users.
I really do not like seeing the OS wars moving into my vehicle :/
Would be MUCH better for everyone if phone mirroring with a standard set of data hooks ala OBD were implemented instead. Give everyone an even playing field to take advantage of.

This is really stupid if it doesn't support other platforms. I would never buy a car that's tied to one specific phone.

I'm assuming it would be an optional upgrade from Entune in which case Apple users may pay the extra money to add that. This also opens the door for Google to also create a in car experience. I could see a time where you can select which radio you want in your car.

Since no aftermarket screen supports lightning connectors, I wish apple would just release their own aftermarket head unit and get it over with. That would be better.

There is MirrorLink available for some phones and some head units which put's android in the playing field for this already.

This. I've wanted them to tackle this market for years. While this is a step in the right direction, it's still not ideal. Apple does make great software, yes. But half of what makes them great is their hardware design and integration. I wouldn't want to buy a head unit built by a 3rd party that uses a subpar touchscreen with this software poorly integrated - and I'd imagine Apple won't be crazy about that either. They're usually all about control, so it will be interesting to see what direction they go with this.

I have the pioneer x920bt and it sucks balls for iPod integration. The only reason I liked it was the pandora integration, at the time it was the only one. And each subsequent iOS upgrade or pandora upgrade has been nothing but issues. Boooo!

That actually makes sense. Too much sense in fact, which is probably why nobody's done it. I'm surprised Apple or Android manufacturers haven't jumped into the headunit market.

Still requires the adapter, a couple more pieces, and is generally bull crap when spending 1400 on a head unit. And until I see one work, I won't believe a bit about them being fully functional with the fiascos I have had. (Sorry I'm bitter)

update to this :
Quote:
Update by Toyota: A previous version of this article said Apple CarPlay would be in Toyota cars from 2015. This is incorrect and we are happy to put the matter straight. No announcements have been made about if and when Apple CarPlay will arrive in Toyota cars.
Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s new CarPlay smartphone integration for iOS devices may be available to Toyota car users by 2015. Toyota Motor Corporation (NYSE:TM), in an official Toyota UK blog, assured that by 2015, iPhone users could get Apple CarPlay integrated in their Toyota cars.
“Come 2015, you’ll be able to get the iPhone experience you love in your Toyota with Apple CarPlay,” says the blog.
Toyota a “committed partner” of Apple
Toyota cars, once integrated with the iOS app, will literally become the biggest iPhone accessory an iPhone user owns. Bringing the technology, in just one year, is a quick turnaround by Toyota considering the fact that it took almost a decade to integrate USB ports and Bluetooth in their cars as an audio source.
When CarPlay was announced by the Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), Toyota emerged as the “committed partner” to integrate technology in future models. This information is mentioned as a footnote on Apple’s website. Further, the assurance by Toyota has just made the commitment of the company even more clear and determined.
However, the automaker has not announced the car model that would be integrated with the technology. Also, no clarification has been given on how the CarPlay technology will work simultaneously with the automaker’s Entune app connectivity suite.
Siri to offer eyes-free experience
During the time of announcement of CarPlay, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) stated that it will be compatible with the iPhone. When the user connects the handset to the car with CarPlay, the app starts using iPhone’s Maps features to provide GPS information such as route info, traffic conditions and more. The app will also try to figure out the destination of the user based on recent emails, texts and contacts.
Apple CarPlay will also use iPhone’s Siri voice features, which offers eyes free experience by replying to the request through voice commands, reading deriver’s message and letting them speak in response or make a call.
The users of CarPlay can run their music from iTunes collection along with any podcast, audio books and third party services like Spotify and iHeartRadio. Other hot brands like Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo could also announce CarPlay features in some of their vehicle models by the end of this year. Car manufacturers like Ford, General Motors, Honda and BMW will also integrate the feature in their cars. Only iPhone 5 and higher versions can enjoy CarPlay feature in their phone due to its use of lightning connection.

Toyota needs to open source Entune (even though they can't) to allow it's user base repair issues. The problem is the that market is so mangled with Patents, Propitiatory Standards, etc.
Case in point; Entune is made by Tweddle Tech, Maps is by TomTom, Apps are in Java, Traffic is by Inrix, Some Open Source, etc.
Then you add Bluetooth 3, 4, 4.1 standards and the Bluetooth Protocol Stacks because we know how hardware manufacturers like to follow standards when they can save $.02 per unit.
I'm not crazy about my Entune, but then again I just upgraded to 3.2 (from 1.8.5) last night.
I've already looking into reverse engineering (hacking) to install more jar apps, so I can do what I want to do with my Entune... if I can customize my rims, engine, paint, interior... WHY CAN'T I CUSTOMIZE ENTUNE!
Apple, while moving in the right direction will cause competition and make Tweddle get off their a$$ and actually put more then two programmers on their software! In the long run this is good but again that I don't want the OS wars in my car!
