Depends where you live.

In CO you just buy windshield repair and replacement service on top of your policy.

I fix 2-3 chips a year and am on my third windshield in as many years.

Just about every insurance except for State Farm covers up to 5 repairs per year ...

Get a pro

When it comes to chips and cracks, I'd rather leave glass matters with the experts. Here in Colorado Springs, Tim at A chick and a windshield A Chick And A Windshield – Your Local Windshield Experts is my regular windshield guy because he can fix anything, no matter how damaged my windshield becomes. He ensures that I never have to replace my windshield; I've had a few stars from driving behind gravel trucks, but they never spread to cover the entire windshield, and once repaired, they are barely evident. Excellent service each time!

I got a very tiny rock chip in my windshield, probably about a quarter of an inch in size. I notified my insurance company and told them it was more of a precautionary thing because I had a tiny chip like this in the past grow to a full on crack in the windshield during the winter once.

Anyway, they sent out a glass tech who repaired the chip, but it is still noticeable. The tech said that on chips that small, all they can really do is seal it to prevent it from growing, but it will still be noticeable. Not sure if that was just an excuse or not, but that was my experience recently.

The repair doesn’t make the chip disappear, just stabilizes so it doesn’t propagate.

Right on. Yeah I'm not sure what I was really expecting for a "free" repair, but all that matters is it doesn't turn into a bigger issue down the road.

I remember being a little disappointed the first time I had one repaired. I guess I assumed it wouldn't be so apparent afterwards, but it really doesn't look a whole lot different. I quickly got over it vs. windshield replacement cost.

I’ve used the Permatex kit on my windshield twice now. It really is a simple DIY job. Just follow the instructions in the kit.

Before I sold my 2006, I had a chip about 4" below the rearview mirror. Took it into several places, they would not do it, as they said the repair could create a glare/prism in the drivers eye.
Brutal - had something similar happen to me years ago

Two chips in my ‘18. One just above the other. First one two months after I bought the rig, the other one last year. Both fairly large; second one I thought would be too large (size of a dime). Repaired at a local glass shop for $25. In line of sight, you get used to it.

Some states do free repairs search around on the internet to see if you qualify per your state. If not get one of those cheapy kits to fix it.
