My wife and I have a Golden Retriever named Zoe. She absolutely loves our 4Runner. We put her in the back and roll the rear window down just enough so she can stick her head out when we're driving around a lake or a park.

We have a wolf dog. She loves riding in the 4runner, playing, camping, hiking, sleeping.
This is not the type of dog to bring home and expect it to lay on the couch and look cute…they will eat the couch and chew on everything you hold dear until properly trained (about 2 years). You must also have a (double) fenced in yard that will become a “war zone” full of holes.
These dogs live a long active life, with no health issues. They bond with one family for life and cannot be trusted around strangers (they will shy away).

Don't have a dog... just doggie-sit 120lbs of Bullmastif. But read this article: ?How To Take Your Dog Camping

It provides a lot of good information.

Also, check out ForceK9.
ForceK9 | News & Events | Home of the K9 MOLLE vest

They had a booth at the Overland Expo and their load carrying harnesses are awesome. If we had a dog, it would own one of these vests (almost bought one for the bullmastif we doggie-sit, but the owner wasn't interested in training him to use it).

We have a Dutch Shepherd. High drive and high energy but can chill out when in the house. We roll the rear window down half way to all the way...he loves it!

I would add, only because your post sounded a little naive (no offense intended), just be aware dogs are a big commitment, they require a lot of time, more so than some children. Adopt don't shop. There are too many dogs (and cats) sitting and dying in shelters because their humans could not take care of them.

That said I have a pound puppy, a lab/pitbull/boxer/? mix, not too big not too small, loves to travel, gets along with most other dogs, and behaves well in the car.

+1

If you want a dog that comes from good lines and temperament, already has a bunch of socialization and training, check into ADA dogs that failed their exam. Not all service dogs in training actually become a service dog. They have been trained very well and of course your adoption fee goes towards training more dogs. They are hard to find, but may be worth it for you.

As mentioned... a dog is a perpetual 2 year old... needs a ton of attention and be watched and constantly trained (although a lot of training can be/is really more like playing for both owner and dog).

Don't rush into it.... but enjoy it like crazy once you find the right fit; and pick something BOTH you and your significant other like/enjoy/want to take care of. And don't let "cute looks" drive your decision.. i.e. that Husky may look cool, but can you REALLY provide about 3 hours of stimulating exercise each day for the dog that this breed requires?

Every dog I ever have from here on out will be trained this way - completely changes the relationship and opens up incredible opportunities having a dog.

Here's my 1 year old puppy Willow. She is an Irish Wolfhound. 4Runner fits her just fine.

Bailey

This our our pup Bailey who we just adopted from a shelter on April 1. She's a 14mo old german shepard/??? mix. Agree with other posters' comments of making sure you are ready for it because they take a lot of time (and $$$). She's a great dog, but she's got severe separation anxiety so that's been a challenge to deal with but we are pushing through.

Her favorite way (unsafe, I know) to ride in the 4runner is with the back seats down and all of the windows open for maximum roaming and sniffing potential!

4 yo German Shepherd
4 yo Blue Heeler
1 yo American Bulldog

As others have said, owning a dog is a lot to take on. Just ask my bank account and the $3k surgery to remove a obviously delicious pair of panties my bulldog ate. They were the spousal units chonies, if they were mine the dog would have choked...

Post pics with what you get. Dogs bring a lot of happiness into the home

Husky/Shepard mix and we don't know what the golden one is. Both were shelter dogs from abusive homes. Even with putting them in the rear hatch with the window down, hair gets everywhere!!!

I have a 2 and half year old Tamaskan male. He’s about 80 pounds and a handful, but the most loyal friend/companion I could ask for. He loves the outdoors, but until the 4Runner, hated riding in the car (I cleaned more puke out of my A4 than I care to remember). I have a canvas cover in the back with a large dog bed on top. He loves the space and we usually cruise with the rear window between half and 3/4 of the way down when he’s back there.

I want to second what jrandom and Okki said. I was 23 when I got him (as an 8 week old) and living by myself. I had committed to give my “dog son” the best life he could have and that meant giving up my “college lifestyle” (e.g. going out with heavy drinking a few nights a week – maybe coming home). I’m literally at the dog park or running with him for about 2 or 3 hours every day after work. I won’t even begin to go into how much money is involved with getting a puppy and responsibly raising one into adulthood (more reasons to adopt an ADA dog…or ANY dog). It’s an extreme case, but I knew that going into it with his breed. That being said, I don’t regret any of it in the slightest.

He's got more than a few pics floating around on here, so I'll just link a few:

Ignoring the soccer ball, I'd like to think this will lead to a future career in the NFL. The Skins need more receivers - and he's already dragging both paws to stay in bounds.
