Engineer couldn't the tuned orifice be bypassed?
Block the flow to it somehow....stopping the sound and the ability for it to sense the panic brake?
This would still leave a fully functional brake system but just not this "nanny" brake feature.......

Or maybe relocate the flowmeter to the engine compartment (or otherwise isolate it acoustically)?
Took a new '15 limited out for an extended test drive the weekend before last and the 'ol lady and I were asking each other what the hell that weird chirp was. Then I figured out it was happening with each brake pedal press. That truck had 6 miles on it so yes it happens from new.

I also noticed this during the first 2-3 months of ownership (from 7 miles on the ODO). The perception of the "Shhhh/swoosh" braking effect fades with time, but the "Panic Assist" feature still catches me off-guard sometimes (even after 68K miles and plenty of Panic Assist activations).
As 1E mentioned, the panic-assist is based off how quickly you depress the brake pedal, so even a "light but quick" pedal-press can sometimes trigger the assist when not really warranted. Can be disconcerting with unsuspecting passengers riding along, but at this point I can generally anticipate when it will be needlessly triggered.

Can panic assist be disabled with techstream?

That's exactly what brake assist is meant for. Mercedes Benz did a lot of research and found that in emergency situations most people weren't hitting the brakes hard enough. They hit the brake pedal fast, but didn't push hard enough, so they didn't get full braking force. They came up with brake assist to solve that -- if you push the brakes fast, but not hard, the brake system will interpret that as a desired panic stop and will apply extra braking beyond the force you are applying. Mercedes was first, but other manufacturers eventually followed.

I doubt it. It is a core safety feature.

Please for the love of God, don't attempt to "re-engineer" the breaking system. I never notice my squish sound anymore (though for the first 5k it drove me nucking futz). No one outside of the Toyota engineers knows the parameters of the system. Messing with it could lead to you damaging your self or worse, some one else. It's an annoying noise - your brain will tune it out just like every other annoying noise that you don't know you're hearing right now.

Indeed - Very unlikely, and agree with FR4R this is not an area for so-called end-user "improvements".
It would be nice if the depth threshold could be tweaked to prevent activation with lighter (but quick) taps. I guess Grandma is the least common denominator here (as far as Legal is concerned)

I think there are two separate concerns here. The squishy, squeaky chirp annoyance, and the actual panic brake assist feature that causes said audible annoyance. I seem to have gone off topic by inquiring if the panic braking system can be disabled. My intention was not to suggest that the annoying noise would be stopped (I would highly doubt that it would) but to simply disable the nanny system completely. My thoughts are that it is a "dumb" passive safety feature that could cause panic on its own if not cause an outright rear-end collision. If this was tied to a true collision avoidance system with cameras and a brain, well that would be completely different and completely welcomed on my vehicle.

If you have ever used this feature then you would realize that the panic it will cause won't happen until you are stopped or almost stopped or driving away safely after almost hitting something. When in the middle of a panic braking situation with the 5th gen 4Runner it's not like you are thinking or have time to think "Hmmm, these brakes are slowing me down WAY faster and harder than normal. Let me let off the pressure a bit and see if I can just perform slowing down better than this braking system." Basically what happens is "OMYGOD a deer! hitthebrakesWHAM HOLYCRAP i'm STOPPED WTF how'd that happen?" This feels like it took nano seconds. You learn after a time to expect it, sorta, but it happens much faster than your brain comprehends it.
To disable this feature would be idiotic. Just my opinion of course.

My '11 LE makes the same wet diaper sound when pressing the brake pedal.
I read somewhere on this forum the OEM brake lines are cheap that expand under pressure that causes the squishy braking. This can be cured with a simple fix (about $50 in parts) by changing the brake lines to aftermarket, SS braided lines.

I've noticed this as well on my '14 as well as our old 07 GX. Both seemed to do it and the brakes in both seemed more "squishy" than other vehicles and made the accompanied sound.
Seems like every vehicle and/or manufacturer have different brake pedal feels. My last vehicle, a F250 has a very touchy hard brake pedal feel and using the same pressure in it as the 4Runner would've been akin to slamming on the brakes. Recently sold my mother's Odyssey. Buyer felt the brake feel indicated worn brakes, showed him the service records and even let him drive my 4Runner around the lot to show how different the brakes can feel between vehicles (turned out to help him a lot and sale went great).
On the other hand, do those of you who notice it more than others also hear the "clicking" sound that's been discussed in other threads? Described usually as a "click" as the brake is depressed?
Mine comes and goes. Even narrowed it down to pumping the brakes fully a few times and it goes away. At one point when doing so I did get the E-Brake light and ABS lights to flash and a beeping sound occurred. Just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience.
Just had mine in for 30K service. Brakes were checked and all deemed OK and performs just fine.
Just wondering as we're on the topic of brakes. Only issue Ive had with mine in almost 31K miles in less than a year. Say "issue" because I don't really consider a problem. The pedal feel and "squishy" sound I feel are normal, the clicking does get on the nerves at times though.

After doing a couple electrical mods (installed HID lights), I started to listen closely to all the noises the car makes. I noticed the squishy sound of the brakes (which happened on my Tacoma as well, so no surprise there), but I did start to notice the clicking noise (kind of like an electronic click) about half way through my braking depression. Quick question - is this clicking noise the brake assist feature that measures how fast you depress the brakes in order to detect a panic stop?
I will ignore the noise if I know it's "normal", but if I'm un-sure of suspect it could be something wrong - it will drive me CRAZY!
Thanks for clarifying.

No, I don't believe that the "clicking" is normal or related to the brake assist feature. I certainly could be wrong but as it seems to be an intermittent noise that isn't experienced by everyone and develops over time it seems to be something else.
Awhile back there was a thread, I'm sure there's been others that have discussed the same noise. Don't think a cause or solution was ever established though.
FWIW, what your hearing is exactly what I, and others, hear as well. What sounds like an electronic click around halfway through the depression of the pedal. Mine comes and goes. Strangely enough it seems to disappear after fully depressing the pedal a few times. No idea why.
Here's the latest thread, although I'm sure there's more;
Clicking Brake Pedal

A completely normal function for 4Runners. I had my 2006 SR5 for nearly 8 years and it made that sound each and every time I stopped on the brake pedal for those 8 years. Traded in the 06 for a 2015 Trail Premium and it makes the same exact noise. You will get used to it, I'm sure.
