Eggs + 4Runner = Turrible Morning

So I walk out to my 4Runner this morning ready to head for work, and I see that it was egged during the night last night. Somebody got our whole street pretty good---all the vehicles that were parked along the curb seem to have been hit.

I guess I was somewhat lucky in that only one egg hit the body of my 4Runner. I washed it with soap and water, but the paint on the spot where the egg hit was definitely damaged. It doesn't look chipped exactly---I'd say it has more of a "scuffed" appearance on that spot.

In any event, does anyone have any advice? I'd normally not get too worked up over something like this, but my 4Runner is only six months old. The spot is really noticeable (at least to me) on the black paint.

Is this something that a detailer could perhaps fix? I searched the board before posting this, but the only info I found was someone in a previous thread saying that a clay bar might help...

A light application of rubbing compound (available at any auto parts store) should remove the scuff marks. The compound will also remove any wax - so you will have to re-wax that area.

Upload a pic of the 4Runner w/ egg for our fun and then a pic of the scuff. My guess is that you can buff it out with some elbow grease and maybe some ScratchX.

Personally I would wet sand (using a block) the area with 1000 grit, use a coarse compound to start, fine compound last and finish off with a glaze like 3M mirror magic. I would be very careful to not block too heavy to maintain the surrounding area's orange peel finish. After that a wax of your choice. If you can't do any of what I just described then a pro detailer is in your future.

Let's not get carried away with wet sanding and eating into the clear coat when it isn't necessary. I own a body shop and run a detail business on the side and have dealt with this many times. On a dark color like this, wash and dry it completely, and I mean really wash. Most times what we find is that what you are seeing is just dried residue that hasn't come off yet. If you can still see it, lightly clay bar the whole side of the vehicle, then polish that door with a mild paint polish. I like Griot's Garage Polish 2 and then 3. Any good quality polish will work just fine. Stay away from rubbing compound unless you absolutely have to. Follow that up with a wax or sealant on that side and you'll be fine. Probably wouldn't hurt to do the whole car with the clay bar and wax since you are that far anyway! I personally prefer a sealant for its longevity, but wax will work fine too. Since you got it off the next morning it most likely didn't eat into the paint, that usually happens after it sits in the sun and dries. Don't get too aggressive with anything, the lighter the polish you can use to get the results you want the better off you are.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I took it in to one local detailer this afternoon, and he said that there's nothing he can do for me---either learn to live with the marred finish or else get the area repainted. I'm definitely going someplace else for a second opinion before I give up. I'm not confident in my ability to do the job myself without causing damage so I'm definitely looking for a pro to handle...

Dude... Post some pictures. It doesn't even sound like it's through the clear if it's "scuffed". You would have said scratched if it were. That being said, anything not through the clear can be 100% fixed. Don't start sanding or anything. Go with the least abrasive thing first and progress to the minimum it takes to repair the area. But first post pictures and we can tell you where to start.

Ps I just saw what boat dreaming said. He is giving ya good advice. POST PICTURES

Ok these are zoomed in to show detail. The actual affected area is about the size of a golf ball.

Dude, $50 is way too low. Could you do $80?

Hey so is that through the paint? Does your fingernail catch on the white spots? That's insane that an egg did that.

Well, like i said before, the picture is zoomed way in so that you can see detail. Just looking with your naked eye, it doesn't look nearly as dramatic.

When I run a fingernail over it, I can definitely feel a texture change. So it obviously broke through at least the top layer. The texture contrast is very slight, so maybe it's possible that it only broke through the clear coat and not the paint? It's really hard for me to tell.

And I definitely agree that it's crazy to think an egg did this. I just assumed this morning that I could take it to a pro detailer and get it fixed with no problems. It was a real bummer to be told that the detailer can't do anything about it.

I still want to go get a second opinion from another local shop. But in the meantime, let me know if you have any thought or suggestions. Besides selling the truck to @SouthernSS for $50, that is...

I think your detailer was right. Which panel is that? At least it's black and easy to match.
