Wheel size and offset for 255/80/17 Tires?

So I had the insurance adjuster come out today and inspect the damage from the little fender bender I had last week. Looks like I'll be getting a nice check from the dumb B*tch that hit me.

Most of the cost is towards stuff that I can get by without (new hitch cause she scraped it up good, and repainting the rear bumper from one little scratch that I'll probably just do myself later on). So I'm thinking I'll plastidip the silver trim piece and spend the rest on a nice new set of shoes.

I'm heavily leaning towards the FN Wheels new 17" 5 star in Matte Bronze. I take it from @adio3x thread they come in a 17x8.5 width? Will a 255/80/17 tire fit OK on that width rim? Also, what offset would I need to get a nice wide stance? Would spacers be needed as well?

Thanks in advance for the input.

The FN five stars come in a 17x8.5 -6mm offset, from what I've read, you do not want to put a 255 on a 8.5. If you air down, you'll most likely unseat the tire.

Well bummer. What width are the factory wheels?

With a 255, I would stick with a OEM width wheel (7"-7.5"). An 8" wheel would be the max width I would go with. 4"-4.5" backspacing.

If you look at the tire specs for whatever tire you are looking at, be it ST maxxs or KM2s, they provide you an acceptable wheel width. I believe that 8.5" is the max width for both, in the 255/80/17 size. While one could air on the side of caution, I dont think a tire mfg would allow for a wheel width that was unsafe (at least under normal driving conditions/tire pressure). Airing down could be a different story.

Thanks, Cooper lists the approved wheel width as 6.5-8.5" of course I imagine thats for normal PSI and use. I don't know if I'll ever need to air down to an extremely low pressure, but would like to be on the safe side just in case.

FN has the Konig countersteer that come in a 17x8" in width. Maybe something like that would work a little better?

So the user Chux over on Tacoma world (who inspired me to get the 255 stmaxx) is running his on Stealth 6 17x8.5" wheels. I think I'm gonna send him a message and see if he's had any issues or concerns with them on the 8.5" wheel.

The only issue or concern is it is easier to break a bead running low pressure than it would be having a wider tire or a narrower rim. Common sense.

My rims/tires will be here on Friday. 255/80s on a 17x8. I will let you know what I think as soon as I have them on.

I think I've changed my mind on the 5 Stars and settled on the Konig Countersteer Type X in matte bronze. I love the stepped lip on them and they remind me of some of the Volk wheels guys would run when I was in the sports car scene. Also the 8" width will give me more peace of mind with the 255 tires if I ever do decide to air down significantly with them.

This picture also helped out

Now to just get the check from the insurance co and get me a set ordered!

You'll be very happy with them. Not only do they look killer, but they're well built and only weigh ~20lbs. That means you'll only be 71-72lbs per corner.
Check my sig for pictures; and not that I'm running a fairly narrow tire as well.

Truck looks great! Thanks for the input. Looks like you been on some pretty awesome trails as well. Wish we had terrain like that here in OK.
