FOB always honks horn when lock/unlocking doors

I just bought a used 2013 4runner SR5. I know the fob receiver has to be hooked into horn for location button, but is there a way to stop the loud beeping when locking/unlocking doors?

Thanks,

Dan

You have a dealer installed crap aftermarket security system, do you have a stupid red button marked "security" on the left hand side of the dash, next to the power inverter controls?

Yes - I have that dealer installed security system and was told that if I open a door and lock my doors from the inside manually, without using the fob or the key, and shut the door the alarm goes off. I do not see a red button anywhere, but have a small/black window or display area that says security on the left side of the middle/lower dash and has red light that flashes when door is open. I immediately hated that alarm because I like things simple and live/work in a normal neighborhoods with no big thefts issues. Is that what is causing my problems? If it is, anyone have any ideas how I can disable that?

That's the factory installed alarm. That beeping can be disabled either by cutting the wire at the beeper module or by turning it off in the truck's computer using Techstream. There's a thread on here about buying the cable and installing Techstream or you can have the dealer do it.

For the record, can you please tell us if you're hearing a high pitched "beep" or if its your horn.

The "horn" you are referring to is located near the air intake filter box.
You could easily unplug it or, wrap it up in duct tape to calm it down.

The factory setting for the volume is set at "7" by default. I have mine set at "2". You can just barely hear it. If you bought the Runner from a Toyota dealer, they should have offered to do a complimentary setting of the options for you.

Pretty sure it is the actual horn. I heard another 5th gen 4runner the other day and it sounded fine. The guy I bought it from was a mechanic, so maybe it is a setting he changed? or maybe it is the dealer alarm but it is a loud/quick double HONK. Almost feel like I am back in the 90s as it is a little embarrassing. I live 92 miles from nearest Toyota dealer so was hoping it might be something I could change through combination of buttons, etc. The Toyota dealer that is 100 miles away is where it was bought from originally and I might ask them if they will do it for me for free the next time I drive it down for an oil change.

Sat in 4runner and locked/unlocked and also hit horn and they sound same. Noise is coming from air intake, so going to take that plastic piece off and see if it is something I can disconnect. Hopefully fob red button will continue to work, but for me that is lower priority that this ridiculous horn on all locks/unlocks
