4RunnerStunner's 2011 5th Gen JBL w/Navigation Speaker Upgrade Build Thread

Hello All!

After spending numerous days looking through the forums to try and find out what aftermarket wire harness that is required for the Limited JBL 15 Speaker with Navigation system, I realized that this has not been addressed. I see more on how the SR5 and the Trail models without the JBL system were upgraded, but no specific details on the JBL 15 Speaker System. Of course, some people that have posted on the speaker swap out has been priceless information and helped me get to this point to where I am at a road block. I am going to break down my journey on how to change the factory speakers out on the Limited 5TH Gen JBL System. I am going to do the dash speakers, front doors, and then the rears. Since I am getting married this weekend, my time for completing this thread looks to be about a month, but will update the thread on progress and information as I progress. I hope this helps out anyone looking for more information on the Limited JBL 15 Speaker system.

This is the speaker that came from the FRONT LEFT DASH SPEAKER location. I will not be replacing it yet as I pulled out the speaker to find out what type of connection the speaker had and if there was an available harness to purchase for easy installation.

do you mean you're stuck on finding the right wiring adapter for the speakers? you want this one: Amazon.com: Metra 72-8104 Speaker Connector for Select Toyota Vehicles: Electronics

congrats and have a great wedding.

These are some pictures of the connection on the 15 Speaker JBL system with navigation dash 3.5 inch speakers. I have seen people say that the Metra 72-8104 wire harness connectors work. That maybe true for the non-JBL system, but not the JBL 15 Speaker system. I was a little upset when I get the wire harness and it was not the correct one.

Metra 71-035lc

So I searched and found out that these may fit and got a confirmation from Crutchfield that this wire harness model number works for my front doors and rear doors, so I am hoping these work for the dash speakers as well. I will not know until Tuesday when they arrive.

Yes, I am stuck finding the correct wire harness before cutting into the factory wire connector. The 72-8104'S are not the correct ones for the dash as I have them and they do not fit.

Thanks for the wedding congrats!

that's weird. i have a 2010 with JBL Nav and the Metra 72-8104 fits the front and rear doors and liftgate (not sure about the dash speakers; i cut those wires.)

you're saying the 72-8104 doesn't fit your 2011 at all?

The 72-8104's may fit the doors and rears, but not the dash speaker connector. Crutchfield said that the ones I listed were the ones that fit. They may be the exact same thing as the 72-8104's but longer maybe. I will compare once they get here. I have not gotten to the door speakers yet. Just doing the dash speaker's first as they will make the most impact right off the bat. Once I get to the doors, I will update with more info.

Trying not to cut into the factory cables, but if I have too, I will without having to cut the entire connector plug end off.

Did you end up cutting the factory wires? Trying to install my new dash speakers.

Hey,

I did not cut the factory wires. I took the wires that were part of the factory speakers and cut them off and soldered them to the replacement speakers. I bought dash speaker bracket mounts and cut them and outfitted them to my new speakers so they were plug and play.

Thanks! I got those Metra 71-035lc's, and they didn't match up. Looks like I'm going to have to follow your lead. Did you solder the yellow/black together, and the green/Violet together? Looks like the yellow and violet are the mids, and the black and green are the highs. Wasn't sure if you could join them, since the aftermarket speakers I have only have 1+ and 1- terminal.

Can you finish the write-up on your speaker upgrade?

What speakers and amps did you use? Did you do any dynamat etc?

Please post a follow-up when you finish. I still cannot figure out what to do w/ my 2013 JBL Nav system.

What did you replace on your JBL system? I want to keep my nav/head unit but would love to upgrade the speakers/amp. Thanks.
