Roof rack boxes

I'm looking for recommendations for large roof rack boxes.

I don't want an aerodynamic rocket box that is attached to two crossbars. I want, basically, cooler-type boxes that I can load onto and unload from the roof fairly easily. The problem is that I want them to be sufficiently waterproof (against rain at 80 mph) and coolers are not unless I want to mess with plastic liners and such.

Essentially, I want something like Pelican boxes but preferably cheaper :-D

Any suggestions?

Hm, Seahorse looks interesting.

Is it useful to look for such things on Ebay/Craigslist or it's not worth the bother?

I've found used hardigg cases on eBay pretty cheap. Some times the shipping isn't worth it though. I have two or three seahorse cases for camera equipment but have not actually had them out in the elements yet.

Amazon has the ones in the second link for $39.99. A buddy has one and it's nice.

Those look promising. How weathertight are they? I see that it mentions it has an "o-ring" but doesn't mention anything about weather resistance.

I have 2 of these in my trucks (Plano 68-Quart Storage Tub, Green: Outdoor Sports : Walmart.com). They were on sale and were kind of good quality compare to others of the same size/price. I said kind because I broke one near the latch when unlatching only one side and opening the lid.

how water proof do you need that to be? I think those Plano is fine unless you need serious durability. Put things in a dry bag (all good sporting goods have them) and throw em' in the big Plano box(es). This way getting to your stuff is much easier since dry bags comes in different colors and sizes. about 20 years ago I made some plywood boxed our of 3/4" CDX with a couple of metal supports for the back of my pick up truck and drive through the Rockies in the dead middle of winter into Canada. Saw lots of rain and snow on that trip but everything stayed day with the exception o f a couple of small spots.

I guess it depends on what the OP plans on putting in there. OP was looking to avoid using dry bags or plastic liners.

As I mentioned in the top post, waterproof against rain at 80 mph. I want to be able to throw dry unpacked stuff inside (tent, clothes) and take it out dry.

I have dry bags which I use on the water, but for the roof of a truck they are (a) overkill; (b) sufficiently inconvenient. I understand that if I use dry bags (or heavy-duty garbage bags), I can just pick up large Rubbermaid bins from Home Depot or something like that -- but I'd prefer O-ring waterproof boxes in this case.

Old issue army boxes work great they are aluminum so they are semi lightweight and also water tight. The one I use is 32" x 19" x 7" so not to tall which is nice for the roof top. I also painted mine a bit more urban camo...
