Takata Airbag Recall
Lately, Toyota and Honda seem to be recalling a lot of vehicles with defective Takata manufactured airbags that have canisters that can function defectively causing shrapnel to fly into the passenger's face and body.
Toyota widens air bag recall, warns passengers
I have not seen the 4 Runner included in this recall. Has anyone seen it?

Toyota says:
October 20, 2014
TORRANCE, Calif., October 20, 2014 – Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., today announced plans to conduct a supplemental safety recall of approximately 247,000 Toyota Corolla, Matrix, Sequoia, Tundra and Lexus SC vehicles produced from 2001 to 2004 and equipped with front passenger airbag inflators supplied by Takata Corporation. This action intensifies Toyota’s efforts to reach customers and remedy previously recalled vehicles, and a small number of newly included vehicles, in certain geographic areas that appear to warrant immediate action, based on testing by the supplier. ...

And I even called the 800 number in one of the many URLs pointed to in this thread.
No 4 Runners from any era affected.

2010 - 2011 4Runner now added to recall
Toyota announced today (5/23/16) an expansion of the recall of Takata front passenger airbags to include the 2010 - 2011 4Runners. Like the previous recalls, it will be phased in based on regions with weather conditions that cause the propellant to degrade faster than other regions.
See Toyota's Takata Airbag Recall Information webpage ( http://www.toyota.com/recall/takata#...kataSafetyInfo), Update May 2016 section for details.

Wonder why not the 4th gens? I can't imagine they used a different type of propellant canister if the 5th gens are also affected.
That's gonna suck because to get the passenger side unit, the dash pad comes has to come out.

Mine is below the glovebox. I have had to remove it a couple of times now. Is there another one in the actual dash area?
Now that I think about it there probably is since the driver side has one in the steering wheel as well as the under dash area.

That's the airbag for the knees/legs, the main passenger airbag is under the passenger side of the dash.

Cool. More squeaks. One more reason to find a different vehicle.

This site is helpful in that you can plug in the VIN number and get recalls specific to that vehicle.

Seems to only specify the passenger airbag, not the driver airbag....
Wonder why no mention of the driver bag? Don't really like driving around with a loaded shotgun in my face :-/
"SUMMARY:
The subject vehicles are equipped with front passenger airbag inflators produced by Takata. According to Takata, the propellant in these inflators may degrade after prolonged exposure to high absolute humidity and fluctuating high temperatures. Degraded propellant can cause inflator rupture during airbag deployment.
SAFETY RISK:
In the event of an inflator rupture, metal fragments could pass through the airbag cushion material, striking the vehicle occupants, and result in serious injury or death.
REMEDY:
Toyota is currently preparing the remedy for this condition and will provide additional information as it becomes available. The remedy, when available, will consist of the replacement of the airbag inflator or the airbag assembly, depending on the vehicle model.
RECALL STATUS: Recall INCOMPLETE. Remedy not yet available "
