rochmpr Rev. 4 - Broke (Build) Thread & Adventures

Picked up a 2014 TE with KDSS a couple weeks ago. Still haven't burned the first tank of gas yet, and parts are on order with more to go. This will be the latest in a line of Toyota trucks.

Rev. 1 - '81 Hilux, All Pro suspension, Detroit / ARB, 5.29's, Dual Marlin, and so forth
Rev. 2 - '92 Xtra Cab Hilux with a 3.Slow, SAS with FJ-80 front axle, Taco rear axle, 5.29's and ARB's, Dual Marlin, Alcan Orbit eye front springs and 63" 1.5" Chevy rears, home build sliders .....................
Rev 3 - '97 FZJ-80 Triple Locked, Metal Tech Sliders, Slee bumper

Currently have the following coming;

I was going to go with the Total Chaos UCA, but with a 20% sale on all Icon products, I'll be going broke a little slower.

FRONT
- Icon Tubular UCA
- Icon 2.5 Remote Reservoir Coilovers

REAR
- Metal Tech Long Travel
- Icon 2.5 Remote Reservoir Shocks
- Metal Tech Offset LCA's
- Metal Tech LT Heavy Springs
- Extended Brake Line

4X4 Labs Sliders

Other Items to Order Soon:

- Wheels - Debating between Konig & SCS (Input? I know Konigs are lighter)
- Tires 285/75R17 - Nitto Trail Grappler MT / Toyo Open Country MT / BF Goodrich Mud Terrains (currently back ordered) - I have had DuraTracs before, great tire, but not the best sidewalls. Any other considerations. I am aware that this will require the BMC and some fender adjustments.
- Under Belly Skids
- Front Bumper - 4X4 Labs
- Rear Bumper - Debating between CBI and 4X4 Labs. Luke is close so no shipping charges, the design and build is extraordinary, but the cost is as well.

Right now, wishing I had opted for no KDSS based upon what I am seeing with some of the other builds. Any and all valuable input appreciated.

Let the fun begin again.

Sitting as of January 2019
Front:
- Icon Tubular UCA's with Delta Joints
- Icon 2.5 Extended Travel Remote Resi's with Icon 700# Coils
- Total Chaos Spindle Gussets & Cam Tab Gussets
- KDSS Swaybar removed
- 4.56 Gears with ARB Air Locker

Rear:
- Icon 2.5 Remote Resi Long Travel Shocks
- Metal Tech Upper and Lower Johnny Joint Links
- OPOR Lower Link Skids
- Dobinsons C59-749V HHD LT Springs
- KDSS Swaybar removed
- 4.56 Gears with Factory E-Locker
- Extended Brake Line
- Trail Gear Diff Armor
- Custom Double Cardan Driveline

Armor / Recovery / Crap:
- 4X4Labs Front Bumper
- 4X4Labs Rear Bumper, Dual Swing-out
- 4X4Labs Sliders with speckles of granite embedded
- 4X4Labs Custom Front Skid Plate, Aluminum
- Bud Built Skids including Gas Tank (Modified a lot for drive shaft rub)
- SCS Stealth 6 in Gun Metal and Rock Rash
- General Grabber X3 - 315/70R17
- Northstar Group 31 AGM Battery
- Pelfreybilt Group 31 Battery Cage
- Warn VR10000-S Winch
- ARB Twin Compressor

- Yaseu FTM-400DR Mobile Radio
- Yaseu VX-8DR Handheld Radio
- Drabbit's Roof Rack
- 60" High-Lift
- Custom Built Washer Reservoir and Mounting Bracket
- Shackles / Straps / Nylon Chokers / Tree Savers / Things
- Misc other stuff from light upgrades, floor mats, seat covers, trail pin striping, tree dents

Welcome! It's refreshing to see someone that's already done a lot of research. Especially with certain threads that are popping up recently.

Here's my opinion.
Get the wheels that look better to you. The weight savings isn't going to matter.
The Toyo's appear to have the best siping of the three tire choices you have. I am personally running the Nitto TG and love them.

The only other thing you want to consider is how often you'll be using the lift gate and whether or not you'll want a swing out. It's the only reason I haven't bought a rear bumper. I don't like the extra 18" hanging off the back and I really don't want to open the swing out every time I go to the store or get something out of the back.

Nice start man! I'm in contact with LT at Metal Tech about my suspension setup and just wanted to share some info I learned from him, since we both have KDSS rigs (I wish I'd opted for one without it, like you). I was told that the long travel rear setup does not play well with the KDSS system, and that the coils/shocks will outflex the travel allowed by the KDSS swaybars, so it basically makes it pointless. Unless you want to remove your KDSS stuff. That's the way I may be going in the distant future.

Either way, good luck with your build. I'll be sub'ing to this and following along. Throw up some pics!!

Exact reason I've been debating between a stock rear versus the CBI without swing. The swing on my 97 proved to be a pain in the arse for daily driving where you go in the cargo area often.

After reading some of the builds, I will most likely be ditching the KDSS. Wish I could pull it and sell it, wishful thinking on my part.

As for access to the rear, that's what the wife's car is for!

For sure. Being that you are only across the causeway, I would love to check it out, plus use some assistance advice, since you're is one of the build's I have read up on and used for reference.

No problem! Hit me up via PM and we can get together. I work and live in Davis so not a big deal if you are ever coming through.

A man in brown showed up yesterday with a package or two. Now to find wheels, tires and time, and the fun will begin. That and may have to let someone borrow the Runner for some fun stuff, so stay tuned for that one as well. In the mean time, play the guessing game and wait for pictures of everything opened up.

Guess the front coil overs still have yet to ship. The rear 2.5" shocks are massive. Can't wait to start putting all of these into place.
