Production --> Delivery lead time
Hi-
Talking to a dealer about a 2015 TE going into production shortly. Curious how long the production process takes as well as how long delivery will take? Is the timing reasonably standardised?
Will hear more from the dealer tomorrow but independent verification never hurt

I'd like to know this, too.
I ordered a limited on Nov 9 and the sales manager said he hope to have it in sometime in January. I think he's blowing sunshine. I did a Google and the timeline was 12 to 16 weeks.

I may be an outlier, but I ordered my TE in September of 13... Received it in March of 14.
If you're ordering an LE or SR5, I would expect the timeline to be drastically less, as they are far more popular vehicles in terms of total sales.
FYI, they don't build your car specifically for you when you order it, they just allocate a spot on the line whenever they do a production run of that specific model. For TE's, those runs are few and far between.
Sucks that no KDSS equipped TE's were ordered by GST.

Lead Time
Ordered my 2013 TE on July 2 of 2012, it came into the port on Sept. 23 and the dealer gave it to me on Sept 28. So almost 3 months.
In talking with the dealer recently he stated they can submit changes for one that is already allocated to their dealership but not built to shorten the lead time.
Order and get what you want, don`t settle for what the dealer wants to sell.

I've been talking to a dealership that had one in Nov but sold it before we got things finalized. They say they have one coming in this month and I've got a deposit on it. Do you need to special order or can you do with one that is just rolling off the line in a standard configuration?

1. It will take usually between 3-4 months for a vehicle to go from beginning of assembly to your dealership lot.
2. You cannot "special order" anything. For example, you can't get a green interior in a purple 4Runner. If it exists on the Toyota website then you can get it.
3. Your dealer usually orders many months in advance based on what he thinks he will sell. Every dealer is different though and what one likes the other doesn't. Dealers can sometimes "trade" inventory and that could get you what you want quicker.
4. Toyota is different from other vehicle OEM's in the fact that the dealers do not buy directly from Toyota proper. Toyota has distributors scattered around the country that dealers order from. Some of those distributors choose not to order some options. Example: A Trail Edition with KDSS in Florida. They will sell many more 2WD units and the 4X4 units could sit on the lot for a long time. When you order something unusual from the dealer, he orders it from the distributor and they in turn order it from the factory.
5. Many options, such as floor mats, roof rack cross bars, running boards and remote starters come from the distributor. These are called "Port Installed Options" and they are OEM Toyota components.
So, to summarize, you can get something in 3-4 months, quicker if the dealer can do a swap with another dealer and if you live in certain parts of the US you might not be able to get what you want from your local dealer because of the distributor and if you want something other than what's on the Toyota website you cannot ever get it. Got it?

As an example: I ordered a blue '15 TEP w/ KDSS and TRD wheels in October and I haven't even been given a build date yet.

And it's amazing what a price difference there is between these different distributors which are all privately owned. Gulf States Toyota(GST) in Houston charges an arm-and-a-leg for these accessories and auto parts.
I order my Toyota parts online from a dealer in Nunan Georgia - supplied by Southeast Toyota Distribution. He's 30% less than any GST-supplied dealer. This is an online price of course, but also cheaper than any online seller in the GST area. I bought running boards for my '14 SR5 4 Runner from a dealer in Columbia, S. C., also SETD- supplied for 1/2 of what the GST dealers wanted. Part numbers were different, but they looked the same.

Don't forget the shipping time from Japan takes roughly a month with customs

delivery time
ordered November 3,2014, dealer pulled some kind of magic swap with another dealer to get a first week of December build, drove the TE off the lot January 28th. If I had to wait for his order to go thru the normal process best guess was I'd be taking delivery right about now. But I love it so it's worth the wait.
