5th Gen Back up camera problem

My 2010 4Runner Limited Back-up camera works intermittanly...will work 4 or 5 times...then not work 4 or 5 times...very random. Dealer can't find problem. Any suggestions?

I would guess wiring harness near the hinges. Over 4 years of opening and closing the hatch may have worked that wire in 2 so it is making intermittent contact. Have you noticed if it may be related to hatch use?

I'm having the same problem. Intermittently the backup camera simply won't engage and I continue to see the map on my NAV screen as I'm backing up. Rather annoying. Anybody else found a solution to this?

My father's 2010 LE w/120k miles just started having this camera issue. It's random. Dealer in Dayton OH unable to determine and I'm 500 miles away.

Does the OEM camera working like a aftermkt setup?

Sounds like @3wbdriver provided a good place to start. Otherwise a failing switch in the transmission selector that indicates Reverse being activated?

Switches are a combination mechanical/electrical device and it's possible over time that the plastic plunger or whatever the mechanical portion of the switch being activated is broken or worn to a point where it doesn't always make the right contact.

Let us know if anyone finds anything, as the rest of our rigs get older we may have more folks running into the same issue.

My situation is a little different but maybe you guys know. I reversed with my liftgate open and smashed the camera on my garage door. Dealer wants $800 parts only. On-line I think it's about $450-$500. Will a cheapo Amazon camera work and just wire in to the existing harness? Thanks

Hi Buckeye,

In addition to the other's suggestions, I think I would check for a wearing 'Reverse camera initiation switch' located on the side of the transmission. It's subject to a considerable amount of wear and heat, and doesn't get serviced or replaced on any schedule... "See the schematic diagram below":

I've marked the wiring circuit (and power source) in RED highlighter and noted the switch with arrows. You could just run a jumper across the switch, the next time it fails, to prove or disprove it's integrity, or test for power at the rev terminal at the mirror/Head-Unit. best to you!

Hi Hawaiian4runner,

You could search the on-line 'Toyota salvage parts' suppliers for the camera assm; should be pretty easy to locate if you include 4'th and 5'th gen 4Runners in your search!

Rgds!

Using the display screen

I've been looking for an RV backup camera system for my trailer and thought about the possibility of using my 2015 SR5 display screen for the monitor. Is this possible? If it is will I be able to go digital wireless from the back of the RV (an 18 footer)? Systems are a big jump in price from analog to digital but the cameras are fairly inexpensive. Would my 2015 display consol have a wiring harness to plug in an additional video source like a camera?

Backup view on rear view mirror?

That schematic.....Is it showing the backup camera view showing in the interior mirror where it seems that the feed goes there after it's switched on from the trans. reverse position?

Back up Camera doesn’t seem calibrated correctly

Does our view seem consistent with everyone else’s? Feel like the lic plate just came in to view all of a sudden. 2017 TRD Off-road

Not sure about the more recent 5th gen, but the 2010 4runner uses a 6V camera; NOT a common 12v like most other cars. It also uses the ground wire as part of switching the head unit.

I installed an aftermarket cam on the tire swing arm and was unable to feed the video signal to the factory head unit without using the factory circuit. I used a splitter harness so I didn't have to cut into the factory harness and could route the wires the way I liked it.

See my build thread for more details.

Thanks and have a great day!
Okki

That's how mine looks like. '17 OR. The red line is supposed to be calibrated to a foots worth of distance if I recall correctly (but you might want to check the manual on that one).
