My new dashcam

So here's my new dashcam. No exactly new though, I have it for a couple of months already but just found time to post it here just in case somebody interested. First of all after reading number of reviews I decided on this one: A118 Full HD 1080P H.264 | Ships from USA | Car DVR Camera Recorder Dashboard Dashcam | Black Box Video Recorder | Authentic NT96650 + AR0330: Amazon.ca: Electronics mostly because of form factor. It doesn't have built-in GPS but I decided that I don't really need to record my speed and route with a dashcam. I have Garmin GPS for that.

This is how it looks when I open driver door (beside the mirror) :

and passenger door:

From outside it's not much noticeable:

When I behind the steering wheel I can see only top of the dashcam enough to see that lights are on and camera is recording. I set camera display to turn off after 1 minute, so it doesn't distract me. Lights which indicate recording, power and microphone are not intrusive, I was thinking about putting electric tape over them, but lights didn't really stand out even at night. :

Passenger doesn't see much more of the camera:

I put it on passenger side mostly because driver side location might potentially interfere with mirror if I ever need to adjust it. Not that I'm ever going to adjust it that much, but who knows : ) As a drawback MicroSD slot is not accessible so I need to remove dashcam from the glued base to download videos to a computer. It removes very easy though. But reset button is fully accessible if I need to use it:

Besides before I glued the holder to the windshield I found out that 3M pad it uses can be removed with a string and some patience. It took me some time to find good position for the camera, making sure that it doesn't see mirror base and dots on the windshield. And I still have space to unplug it and take camera off the holder.

Installation was easy but my installation skills are far from good, I'm sure Antman would have done it way better, but since he hasn't done it yet I installed it without removing any panels so I can easy re-do it when somebody comes up with some nice installation walk-through.
Basically I hid power cable under headliner, then under passenger pillar or whatever it calls:

although cable didn't fit between it and console.

Then I routed it inside the door weather strip:

and under the console:

After that I routed dashcam cable with my GPS cable - not really neat but out of way : )

And finally plugged it in the 12v outlet (I already had splitter there):

So far I'm quite happy with this dashcam, it produces decent videos in 1920x1080, 1 minute takes 100Mb, which gives me about 8 hrs with 64Gb microSD card. I mostly intend to use it for filming trails, but it sure can come handy in case I get into accident. Hopefully next year I can have some interesting videos, the only negative thing I found is that canoe on the roof closes a lot of camera view : )

Looks pretty good. Reasonably priced too. I have been looking for one myself. I am not originally from Canada, do you know if these are legal in Canada? Someone told me these might not be.

I'm pretty sure that dashcam is perfectly legal in Canada. I wouldn't get it otherwise : )

Of course if you get caught pushing camera buttons when driving you can be ticketed for distracted driving. Other than that I don't see any issues.

Dashcams are often referenced in the media. Saw one instance where some dude on the 401 in Toronto tried to stage a fake rear end accident by rolling backward into the car bedhind him in a traffic jam.

the only issue I see being on the dash like that is the forward view. most setups I have seen and my own camera is to mount them as close to the headliner to get a better view and to cut down on the vibration from the dash itself.

plus its easier to hide the cable in the leading edge of the headliner than the dash itself.

Isn't the camera beside the rear view mirror? I believe that's a compass on the dash.

Folks, camera is on the windshield next to the rearview mirror (passenger side) - few inches from the ceiling. There is inclinometer on a dashboard. I have it for long time and so used to it, I didn't realize it can be mistaken for something else : )

ha, old eyes didn't even notice. you are correct.

the dots don't interfere with the camera does it?

on my setup I am to dam lazy, I just let the cord dangle down straight to the socket. but then again 95-99% of the time its just me in the vehicle.

edit : forgot to add, since I have a removable 64gb card, its just easier to move movies to the computer than manually transferring them via the camera itself. easier access to camera since the camera clips into a permanent mount.

I use a TF2+ from vicovation. the upgrade is the marcus-4 which I hope to be getting next month finally.

Nope, I mounted camera so the lenses are just below the dots.

Got the removable card too, but have to remove camera to get to the card slot. card is so small though - I prefer to take whole camera to the computer ; )

Things have come a long way simce my last build. Most of all the size and the price of the units. As well as the video quality and the availabilty of GPS with digital recording times.

I was launched into the world of dashcams with this post, spending a good bit of the night seeing what else is out there as I can see some value in one of these at this price point. I do like the size of the unit, the cost of the unit, the video capabilites, the stated build quality, as well as video looping, GPS capabilities, G shock capabilities to save files, 1 minute file sizes (that record a feww seconds of the previous file on every next file.) night qualit is doable, daytime is excellent from reviews. Plus the shape and seemless install that mimics the factory look. Date and time stamps.

What I do not like, that the garmin 200 has at double the price is with the GPS module is that it will not record information as a stamp, ie coordinates and speed. It imbeds them into the video file requiring another application that shows driving speed and location while file is playing. Not the best feature and seemingly more difficult if the need would arise to use the video in a legal manner, also it seems as if the unit does wash out in very bright light and in some night situations it is very dark at night, plus the built in microphone audio qaulity seems lacking, the capability of adding an external microphone even one that has wireless capability would have been stellar. Alas, i no longer do any of that type of survailence work to warrant that though it could be useful. You said that the bright light was an issue and others have stressed the same conclusion.

Now as far as modification of the unit. It seems that some type of polarizing filter could take care of some of the glare and lighting problems. Mirroring the video on the headunit as a video input is a possibility though I have not researched what is required to make it capable of doing so, the factory sat/nav that is. I think that the power coukd be had behind the map light upper panel removing the need to have exposed wiring and plugs making it even more seemless an install.

Would you buy this unit again or go with one of the plethora of the other ones? I am willing to give it a try even with its short commings as it meets most of if not all my particular needs, not just cool factor needs..

you might want to look into the marcus line by vicovation. marcus-4 is the top of the line with great day video and imo the best night capture.

I am biased since I have a TF2+ and I have posted some videos from that old dashcam in this thread Dash Cam

also lookup videos from youtube on the marcus-4.

The price premium is quite high with either you mentioned. Both going double of the original camera mention by the OP. For me at this time the difference with the GPS module may offset the downcomming I mentioned for my use. Though I welcome the different models, i domt think there is much over the A118 bside video quality. The features and form factor i dont think at least for me can warrant the price difference for a meager upgrade in performance of video. If we where talking 620x480 vs 1080p then yes. But i just dont see it. Now if i could find something a little more simlar features with my wish list then I woukd have a winner. I really do like this form factor

the only reason I went this brand was the night time recording quality. I usually drive to work in the dark and leave work when its dark.

I haven't seen any of the cheap brands do as good in complete darkness as this brand.

I have a 12 mile stretch were there are no street lights between town and base so that's my biggest factor.

also try www.dashcamtalk.com forums and www.techmoan.com

In short - yes, I would buy it again. There is improved version is going to be released by Street Guardian in February - so in a few months I might want to buy it. If of course it's stable and don't have major issues.

I have my A118 from September and so far it's fully meets my needs.

- it has good picture quality, i.e. picture is clear enough to read road signs, license plates etc. Night videos could be better, but it's acceptable. It shows you whatever lighted up by headlights in a pitch black night. With street lights in city it's adequate enough in my opinion. It has some imperfections when light suddenly changes but it happens not very often, has to be very specific condition and light angle. Could depend also on windshield and exact camera position - I'm not sure. I had camera went darker for few seconds when I got in direct sun light after driving in deep shadow just once since September, but I don't watch all recorded videos of course : )

- small form factor, it doesn't take much place on windshield and doesn't look like something worthy to steal. The holder has big enough base to glue it to windshield for good and dashcam can be easily removed from the base. I also like the fact that mount does not allow dashcam to vibrate, lose power, change angle of view or fall down on uneven roads.

- it has a display so you can aim camera correctly and could adjust vertical position to choose how much of hood you want to see in the videos.

- it's stable, at least I haven't had any issues with my dashcam, I got it on some gravel roads and one long trip - 700 km one way.

- it has all dashcam features such as button to keep a recorded video, recycling videos as needed, support of 64Gb card etc.

- it's not overly expensive - it's my first dashcam and I wasn't sure if I will use it or remove after few days.

Now some concerns.
Some people report that motion sensor doesn't work very well and G sensor gives them problems. I don't use motion detection and set G sensor on low - never had an issue.

A118 can be picky about some microSD cards - I got Samsung EVO and it works fine with it.

Battery - I worry about how it will handle winter, if battery dies due to extreme cold and won't finalize videos correctly when power is cut I would probably replace it with Street Guardian version (same form factor but capacitor instead of battery). Providing of course that Street Guardian will be at least not worse : )

Microphone. It's not perfect, i.e. it's picking some noise and people on rear seat should talk loud to be heard on videos. I keep microphone on just in case I need to comment on some events on the road, and for this it works just fine.

GPS - I didn't really want to have my speed and location recorded, if I witness an accident I would be more comfortable providing video to the police or publish it on youtube without my speed on display. Not that I'm a speeder but sometimes everyone goes over limit a little bit : )

View angle - it's wide. Meaning that I can see more on sides but side view is distorted and front view is smaller. I'm not sure if it's good or bad, sometimes I wish that front view is bigger, but I don't want to loose side view. I guess it's a reasonable compromise : )

So overall I think that A118 is the best dashcam for my needs on the market today. The biggest advantage of course is a form factor and mount but other parameters are quite good and I don't see myself wishing for other dashcam as long as it works. But I realize of course that eventually smaller and better dashcam will be produced and 1080 video will be legacy as VGA today - we'll see then : )
