Our mufflers are pretty poorly/cheaply designed, and because of that, they get very hot under any kind of load.

During normal operation at idle, they are about 215*F, and after driving up a moderate hill, I measured my mufflers temp at 320*F! Even if your driveshaft isn't flinging grease on your exhaust, you muffler will get so hot during any kind of load, it will tick, snap, crackle, and pop! The sound will be most apparent from the rear pass side wheel well. Just drive up a couple of floors in a parking garage, park, and check your rear wheel well and you will hear and probley smell it.

Check out my post below for more details:

Burning rubber smell right rear fender well.

After 30k miles of this, I have given up and accepted this as normal for our 4Runners.

Ah I see... I def have to agree tho it does get pretty hot. Usually after I take my truck up to Tue mountains on a job... By the time I get home it smells like crazy of burning rubber. Sometimes it makes me worried and feel like my trucks going to catch on fire. I guess its just the normal sounds this truck makes from time to time but will bring it up at the next oil change just for them to make sure its nothing serious

It could potentially be the charcoal canister towards the rear of the vehicle. In the FJ Cruiser world, they are known for making some strange sounds and smells. If this is the case, you dealership should be able to diagnose the problem. That said, as you have already heard from many other, a ticket sound can be caused by so many different things. Post up with what you find!
