I’m just gonna measure how much comes out and put the same amount back in.

You will likely spill a little when trying to refill. I would have a back up plan to do the temp check just in case. Temp check is not hard to do.

Torque app with bluetooth OBD reader does not show tranny temp.

When doing the jumper pin method I get the shift indicator to change to D when in park. I pulled the jumper and the tranny pan feels quite warm. Does the D start to blink when it's over temp or the A/T Oil light? The overflow is still pouring out and I put back about what came out. 4 quarts or so drained with only front jacked up. Refill and check procedure the tranny pan is level with rear jacked up as well. Am I doing the check procedure wrong?

ETA: The D indicator started blinking. Fluid still coming out of overflow at a good rate.

Thanks for the reply. The pan feels plenty warm and fluid is as well but not burning me. The D indicator did start to blink so I think the temp is ok I just have qualms about letting all that fluid drain out. This is the second time I have done this and the first I replaced the amount that came out so I don't see where all this extra fluid is coming from.

Flashing D is an over-temp indicator. The fluid volume expansion per degree is substantial; I'd adjust again at the right temp.

Hmmmm. I understand the procedures but don’t understand why? If your rig is sitting in the driveway/garage overnight and you pull the transmission drain plug and get 3 quarts of cold fluid out can’t you just put 3 quarts of cold fluid back in? If you put back in Exactly the same amount why even mess with fluid temperatures?

I use the scan gauge II .. no problem .. also other engine info .

I let it cool down some and then opened the overflow plug up. Only about 5 or 6 ounces came out so I stopped worrying about it. Are the drain plug threads easy to strip? I did not get my torque wrench to click with a new crush washer even after it seated. Steel would be hard to strip.

This is a great idea!! Can you monitor All your temps while driving for instant verification? If I’m working my rig hard I’d like the option to look at all my temps at a glance.

Just get a cheap bluetooth ODB plug and use an app with your iPhone. There are actually 2 Trans temp sensors. One for the Tq converter and one post cooler.

That would work if you were 100% sure that the transmission was properly filled the last time the fluid was changed and no fluid loss had occurred in between.

Jumpering the pins is a piece of cake - takes no time at all. Most easily accomplished if you make a small jumper gadget that eliminates the need to crawl down below and squint looking for the #4 and #13 ports in the OBD connector. That said, the jumper method is documented in the FSM.

Pic of gadget below - taken from tacomaworld.com - gadget sold by all kinds of people on ebay. Here's one:

You have to add a custom PID to see the trans temps with the torque app. I just did it for a trip while towing and it worked great. Link to the instructions below from a previous thread.(note that you have to have torque pro($4.99) to add the custom PID. The free one lets you add it but doesnt function)

Torque Pro Transmission Temp 5th Gen

Thank you sir! This the best idea I have seen on this thread, use it to monitor all your temps during your normal use of the vehicle and get live tranny temps when doing your transmission service. It’s a win win!
Just placed my order, thanks DeltaWhiskey.
