Thanks for all the info. I installed a 12586 as well and it was just what I was looking for. At idle, sounds stock and a bit louder than stock at higher RPM. Of course it loudest at wide open throttle which is not extremely loud, so if anyone is looking for a loud muffler, the 12586 is not it. It has a subtle sound to it that can pass as a stock muffler. Shoot my neighbors Toyota Sienna sounds louder from across the street.

yeah I guess I'm just getting old. But I like the mellow deep tone this 12586 gives out. Its not too crazy aggressive. I haul alot of shooting gear, ammo and guns usually in my 4Runner. Last thing I want is attention from the cops when I'm heading to the range with all my gear. All my is stuff legit but just dont want the hassle. This is the main reason for the swap to a mellower muffler.

I'll say!
Anxiously awaiting your eventual dyno results with your 1-2 punch of CAI + Magnaflow

Got to Phoenix just fine but only got 18.8mpg coming up here had to fight alot of side wind. Which killed my gas mileage...
Total trip was 374.4 miles before I gas up. And I still had about 61miles left so the trip computer said.
filled up with some chevron 87oct and truck seem to like free state gas more than komifornia gas. Shes been holding steady around town at 19.8mpg right now...
Another thing with the CAI + Exhaust system passing is soo much easier even when going up hill...
Will report how mybgas mileage is on the way home.

Thanks for the great info and taking the time to share here! Nice to see such nicely done posts about engine stuff! CAI (or Eco-Box) and a muffler are on my to do for sure.

Gas mileage and exhaust restrictions

It does feel more drivable with the intake and even more with the exhuast. But the improvement was as noticeable as it was going from stock to intake.

Hi Rocky,
I'm in Pasadena. Thanks for all the local info. You've looked into these upgrades a lot more than I have. Thanks for all the quantifiable data, like the dyno' test results.
So is your gas mileage up or down? I can't tell from your lingo and I don't really know what to expect. The CAI is the first thing I'd do. After that maybe a throttle body tube extension (what do they call it?). And when is Toyota gonna make a Turbocharger (caching$$$)?
The thing I don't get about the muffler is you still have the stock exhaust headers and catalytic converter in line in front of the muffler. In theory, any larger size of tube after that is only a slight improvement. Of course you have the numbers and results to show it works. We all know a larger tube and muffler improves performance.
Your photo shows the exhaust end up under the truck, next to the spare. The back end tends to suck exhaust up the back side whenever the exhaust exits rearward. If your back window were open you'd get exhaust inside the car. What about running that exhaust tip out sideways behind the rear wheel? It would still be farther forward and tucked closer.
I've read one parts supply source that offers a Y-tube header, but it's not legal in California. I had a non-legal header on my 4 cylinder Toyota pickup years ago and it was always a lot of work to replace the stock parts before doing the California Smog Check every two years. I think one option may be a larger cat', but these cat's can be very expensive. What do you think?
Thanks again,
Dave

My gas mileage was about 20mpg coming back from Arizona. But lately I cant get anything higher than 19mpg because I cant seem to take my foot off the gas. Just so I can hear my exhaust rubble.

I dont want to go up to a 3" exhaust because I didnt want to move the power band higher up in the rpm range. I want to keep it low to mid range where we usually all will spend our times in when we go wheeling. But I know for sure that a 3" exhaust coupled would make more top end power but thats not what I was after.

I have not experience this ... the tip itself is only 6" to 10" shorter than where stock was. I didnt want to route it to the side because it would defeat the purpose of getting it as tucked as possible for wheeling purpose.

I have a 2014 4runner ... it would have to be smogged in 2020 ... Newer vehicles here in California dont require smog until its first 6th year when the warranty for the catalytic converted ends. I plan on keeping my stock y pipe anyway. So it shouldnt be a problem.

Picked up a set of Konig Counter Steer X Type, set of their wheel weights, and wheel locks from
@ FNWheels
and since I just back to work. I didnt want to buy new tires. Wanted to wait to get the tires after I get the rig lifted.
So I went to allen tire to have the stock tpms and stock tires swapped over.
So I was interested in the weight difference. I did notice when I stacked the boxes of my stock wheels and the box with my 5th wheel ( when I get my rear tire carrier. ) that the stock wheels were alot heavier than the konigs...
And soo I zero'ed my scale with an empty box and then place the konigs wheel inside of the box and re-weighted the box with wheel inside of it ...
and heres the stock wheel inside the box as well..
9lbs weight savings per wheel on the Konig versus the stock... Drivability it does feel ligther or easier to steer...
very happy !!!!

after 3 weeks ... I like it but kinda wishing for more aggressive tone now. Actually I wish it was as aggressive as the flowmaster minus the drone in the cabine at 35 to 40mph...
