Thought provoking thread! It led me to read about rating factors for hitch pins
https://www.extension.purdue.edu/ext...ppp/ppp-94.pdf

Hitch pin attach point - - - If the strap is pulled at an angle the load on the pin is uneven so a hitch pin should only be employed for a straight pull. Pulling at an angle can also cause chafing of the strap against the edge of the receiver.

Bow shackles' curved surface allows a wider variation in safe pull angles

Many times it is difficult to set up a recovery for a straight pull

Some hitch shackles are drilled to allow vertical and horizontal orientation for more versatility

I researched this extensively a while back and decided the best combination for my use cases (sand and snow) is an elastic strap tied to a soft shackle connected to my hitch through a pin. This offers the best combo of price, flexibility, and reliability. By the way, not all pins are the same. If you are going to connect your strap directly on the pin, get a heavy duty one like this:

^Great recommendation. The pin is extremely important.

I’ve recovered and been recovered multiple times using the receiver hitch with a quality hitch pin, shackle, and tow strap rated to 30,000 lbs. I’ve also used these items to pull massive tree stumps around my yard after cutting a huge oak tree down. This method has proved safe and effective. Just don’t be one of those morons that shock loads the system...it’s painful to watch.
