Some good news about the 2015 Entune

Hi Guys,
My dad picked up a 2015 Limited 4runner. Came with the premium Entune. We thought, before purchase, that it was going to allow DVDs to be played. Apparently that was possible on older models, but not the current model. It was disappointing that there wasn't an easy way to feed video into the head unit. But alas, we have discovered a feature that isn't really disclosed in the shoddy documentation available for this thing. Heres what it took to play video from his iPad mini:

Lightning to HDMI A/V adapter
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

HDMI Cable

HDMI to RCA converter (found at my local radioshack) RadioShack HDMI to Composite Converter - Radioshack

Some RCA couplers Amazon.com: Female to Female Gold RCA Coupler Joiner Adapter Pack of 10: Electronics

RCA (Yellow, Red, White) to 3.5mm TRRS cable http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Note: The Red and the Yellow RCA plugs have to be swapped due to the tip, ring, ring, sleeve configuration on the head unit.

Plug this bad boy in to the aux 3.5mm jack next to the usb input connector and you should be good to go.

Also picked up the prestige unit so he doesn't have to mess around with the lockouts.

Big thanks to Toyota for making this one so mysterious. What put me on to it was: when you select A/V input on the head unit, it displays a 3.5mm jack with the TRRS instead of just TRS separators. Go figure. Don't even bother asking a toyota salesman about this sort of thing unless you enjoy being lied to.

Hopefully this benefits someone else.

Enjoy!!!

I don't really understand why anyone would want to play video on the head unit. Nothing like some good old fashioned distracted driving, I guess.

I especially don't understand why someone would play video from an iPad Mini, which has a much greater screen resolution (and probably a bigger screen, right?) than the factory head unit.

Also, and just playing devil's advocate here, but I doubt the salesman "lied" to you about this. He probably just didn't know. I mean, you yourself admit it took a while to figure out, and it doesn't appear to be an officially-supported feature, right?

have to agree with bob.

1. 4runner screen is 6.1" / ipad mini 7.9"
2. 4runner resolution is 640x480 / ipad mini 1 is 1024x768 / ipad mini 2 & 3 is 2048×1536

a lot of work to downgrade by a lot.

I am interested in playing video on the screen. I do a lot of waiting at school pickups, etc.

Have you tested this?
While I think you found a good solution, Im wondering if there is a more direct way, which less adapters and wires.
I was trying to get video played from my iPod Touch through the USB port but it didn't work.
Seems there are, or might be, 2 ways to do video. When you browse the connected iPod on the Entune, you can navigate to a videos section.
The older iPods, like the Apple Video iPod used to play video through their headphone port.
I will do some experimenting and will post here if I find anything that works.

well I have to say on the new non entune units like the one in the son's new 15 camry xse, you can change some of the options that were only techstream changeable.

like auto headlights sensor, timer for interior/exterior light duration.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I am well aware of the screen size difference. I was just illustrating the possibility. You could do the same with your iPhone, I think the androids have a HDMI output on them, etc.

As for the iPod video...the original iPod videos did indeed have a TRRS 3.5mm cable that would output video. So if you had a male TRRS 3.5mm on both ends, you'd be in business. When Apple came out with the iPod classic (the updated iPod video), they did away with that feature. However, you could get a 30pin dock connector cable that turned into a usb cable and the RCA l/r/video cable. This would let you output audio/video AND charge the iPod classic at the same time. So, I assume this would work as well, but you'd then need to adapt to the TRRS plug to get into the headunit.

Yes, it's a lot of cabling. But for someone who wants the functionality, it is doable.

Is there a better way? I don't know. But so far it's the only way I've found that works.

As for the dealership lying...hahaha...well, I guess it's just difficult to find salesmen who actually know their product.

Stupid question here, just how do you play video from your iphone to the truck screen. I tried doing it today while my son and I were waiting in the car. I have a 2014 model.

(Edit) Sorry I didn't see that someone had asked the same question.

Listening to it only. The head units support analog video output only from things like older iPods. Basically it was an antiquated feature before it even came on the truck

I do this with my iPhone, but the screen is too small. The kids fight over who gets to see the phone. Normally I don't carry an IPad around with me. Just another thing for the munkies to break and lose.

Yes, just need to connect your iPad via bluetooth for audio functions. Whatever you're playing on the iPad (music or video) will stream to the head unit.

I'll do the same with my iPhone if I only have one kid in the car. But if I have both, I need the iPad (mounted) so both kids can see it.

I hear GRIMACE about the hassle and security of bringing an iPad. What can I say...we already travel with a pile of crap anyways.

Sorry to write in an old thread. However, I've recently encountered a problem with my old HDMI to RCA converter, it couldn't be fixed, so I was meant to buy a new one. Although I'm quite informed about all these converters, it turned out to be a tough choice. My "first aid" was an article on 5 Best HDMI-to-RCA Converters Reviewed 2020 | Ladi6.com. I bought Tendak HDMI2AV and it's perfect for my old TV. Great analysis of every product provided. Check it!
