Monk's Normal Guy Build and Adventure Thread

Hi, my name is Monkeymenno (you can call me Monk) and I own a 4Runner. I needed a body-on-frame (solid rear axle) vehicle to tow my camper with and didn't want a box - so here I am.

My previous vehicle was a 2007 Honda Ridgeline with a cap. It towed my camper really well, but went through tires like they were made of ice cream when I did as the tongue weight screwed with the suspension geometry so much. So with 250,000kms on it I gave it to my Dad, and ordered my Magnetic Grey Trail. I haven't done piles of off-roading but what I have done I have enjoyed immensely, so I hope to do more of it.

I'll be honest, I really didn't know the heritage the 4Runner had before I started looking to replace my Ridgeline, but have been ever more intrigued by the things I have heard and seen. Stories of this bullet-proof little bulldog SUV are everywhere. So in with both feet I jumped.

I need my 4R to do a few things:
1.)Haul my wife, 3 daughters and me when I am home. Or to see my wife's family 2400km away.

2.)To Go Camping: 23ft trailer and all the gear you would imagine 4 women to bring camping.

3.)Haul me to work, mostly in Northern Manitoba about 8 hours from home. I am a Lineman by trade and work takes me away. I need to be able to take me and up to 800lbs of gear anywhere and everywhere from Northwest Ontario to Northern BC and beyond in every weather imaginable.

My goals for this thread are as follows:
1.) To document my experience with the 4Runner, hopefully to provide useful insight to people looking for a Swiss Army SUV.

2.) To do something with my 4Runner every week or two that is worthy of posting - be it a mod, an adventure, a frustration or just what it's like to be a 4Runner owner.

And... since everyone else has one and mod list.

1.) Weathertechs: Little girls = muddy floor as they love to be outsiden DONE
2.) Roof Rack: I have lost the ability to do some of the hauling I did in my truck and a rack will restore most of it. Canoes, building material, old crossarms, cross country trips - it will see it all.
3.) Extra Lights: Northern driving can feel really dark and lonely in the winter. No idea what I will put on or how but it needs to be done
4.) Paint: The front and rear silver trim that my wife hates needs to be black. Might plastidip, might bedliner am open to suggestions. I have some other ideas, but I haven't seen anyone else on the forums do them so I am going to hold my cards close for now.
5.) A front hitch receiver hidden in the front bumper. Oh so useful once you have had one.

Welcome to the site! Looking forward to your build.

I might add you may want to consider airbags or Timbrens for the rear with that much cargo. These 4runners are sprung a little soft.

Thanks. I had been looking at airbags. What do you like better, the Airlift or the Firestone system. The Timbren system I hadn't really considered. How would it compare to an air bag set up for ride?

I like the Firestone bags but really they are both about the same for our 4runners. The nice thing about the bags is that you can adjust the air pressure for the load. Unfortunately, the style of bags that the 4runners use can be prone to getting pinched and leaking. The Timbrens are more of an extended, progressive bumpstop but requires no air or maintenance.

There's a good thread here about the Timbrens. After reading it I ordered Airlift bags from Amazon. I liked the simple installation and hands off use of the Timbrens but I don't like the idea of the impact they have on the ride when not towing. I haven't installed the airbags yet but I figure once they're in it's easy enough to change the air pressure as needed for towing or regular driving.

Thanks for the advice, from what I have read I will be going with some Airlift bags unless there is a game changer article or advice.

On another note, I ordered a Drabbits full rack last night. Right now they have an 8 to 10 week build time and I am 14th on the list. If you are from Canada like me, they don't have tons of experience with brokers but they seem willing and eager to serve. I can pick mine up across the border which will save approximately $200. I have just enough time to get my passport in order.

Gobi Roof Rack, you will not be disappointed. And there is a group buy going.

I was going to go with the Gobi until I saw the Drabbits. To my eye I prefer the profile, it's going to be about $350 cheaper, it should fit my canoe better, and I love the detail around the antenna. That said, the Gobi looks pretty sweet, I just think the Drabbits suits my needs a little better.

Took my 4R out down the back roads and snowmobile trails of Northern Manitoba today, nothing too crazy as it was pretty chilly this morning and I was on my own. Really I am just trying to get used to what it can do, how it moves and adjusts as it takes a line. I am used to off roading bucket trucks and loaded utility trucks so it's a real treat to have a fraction of the weight. I am also blown away by how sure footed it is, never sliding on the ice the way my Ridgeline did, even though it had ice tires.

I travel to Snow Lake for work and should get pretty fun up here once the snow clears because there is a pretty active off road community to be a part of.

I am slowly making up my mind about mods I would like to slowly accomplish and I think plastidipping my hood is going to be high on the priority list - I have never had so much glare off a hood before because of the scoop, wouldn't trade it though.

Surprised your list doesn't include FJ steelies and some Hakkapeliittas.

Something for next winter is in the works. Hakkapeliittas are not available in our size from what I have seen. I have really liked the continental wintercontacts my wife put on her 500 but I don't know what they would be like on my Runner. I would like to stay with aluminium wheels for winter to keep rotating, unsprung mass to a minimum. Suggestions are always welcome.
