ECO and Cruise Control not working. Any thoughts?

Hello guys,

I'm a fairly new member to the 4Runner world and was curious if anyone knew a way to fix this.
I have a 2011 4Runner SR5.
I was driving home today and noticed that my ECO light and ECO gauge would not appear. Also my cruise control will turn on (light showing up in the dash) but will not engage. Has anyone else had this issue? Any pointers?

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
I have already disconnected the battery to see if it would reset itself.... But no luck.

ECO gauge and light can be turned on or off. Probably read the manual to figure that one out but I think you have to hold down your display or mode button to gain access to the menu.

The only time cruiser control didn't work for me is when I had a random code that killed off all of the computer smarts (VSC and the like). Dealer couldn't figure out the code and once it was reset (2,000 miles on the ODO) it never came back (11,000 on the ODO). If the light is turning on then I would think it is waiting for you to 'set' the speed you want. Probably something in the manual about that to as I'm currently to lazy to remember if it's pushing a button or toggling up or down on the stalk.

Good luck!

I scroll through the options in the middle of my gauge cluster and can toggle the ECO on and off and still no luck getting the ECO to come on.

As far as the cruise control when I turn on the cruise control (green light appears on the dash) I try to set the cruise by pushing down on the toggle yet nothing engages.

New problem has came up now... Driving on the HWY it will not shift into overdrive to cruise at a lower RPM... when I slide the shifter over to the shift select option the gear 4 flashes twice then goes away and doesn't allow me to shift up or down. The only way I can get it to shift to the higher gear (5th I believe) is sliding it into neutral and then back down to drive.....

Does it idle normally or is it a little high? On the older cars a vacuum line leak would prevent the cruise control from working. I honestly don't know how much that may determine how things work on these newer computerized gizmos. But a vacuum leak would also make it idle a little faster because it is drawing in more air somewhere.

Any way to check for error codes? Not sure if you have an obd2 reader or not, but it sure sounds like its in some sort of limp mode if you've lost top gear too.

You may have also lost the light for the check engine too if you've lost a few others on the dash. I'd definitely get a code reader on there soon, or at the very least, take it to an auto parts store, they will lend you one to see what the code(s) is.

On mine I had a problem with the shifter. It showed being I. Drive but it wasn't and the cruise would not engage. Do the newer models have a electric shift sensor

I got back into it tonight and everything worked taking it to the dealer on Monday to see if they can run a scan and check for error codes. Oddest thing I have ever experienced.

Almost sounds like it's stuck in "S-4" manual shift mode.

I know S-Mode
1) Disables ECO Indicator
2) Defaults to 4th Gear (no Overdrive unless you flip to 5th)
and might possibly
3) Disable Cruise Control (maybe).

Curious what codes you can pull.

Also - My Tranny will hold 4th gear sometimes (no doubt due to "Learning" my 'passing slow people in the left lane' habits - sometimes it will hold for 15-20 seconds, and I can switch to S-4 and back to "D" and it goes right back into 5th)

Good luck!

Check the ECU. My wife's old VW did the limp mode after sunroof leaked and caused water damage to the ECU which was under her passenger floor. It was $2500 to fix, but our comprehensive insurance coverage paid for it without a fight.
