seems to me most people go for some sort of plate on the top of the slider, is there a reason for it? I went the opposite direction and stayed with the RSG angled tube slider (no plate) because I figured it'd be easier to clean the mud off. I have some claw marks I need to fix my dog made on the passenger door at the bottom before I install them. but when I do I'll post a few photos.

Are there any rock sliders that look like the N-Fab Nerf Bar and Predator Tub Steps? I really like the way the look but I am also looking for functionality. Please let me know if I'm missing the point of rock sliders, I am still educating myself on off road.
P.S. I am not planning on doing any extreme off roading but I am planning on taking my baby out on some trails, Mojave Desert and Alabama Hills.

Need is a strong word except on a dedicated trail rig that does very hard terrain.
They are generally just an insurance in most cases, even on regular difficult trails. They waste quite a bit of ground clearance so you may think they saved you when you would not have hit without them. But one true bad hit and they will pay for themselves. If you are inexperienced and want to go straight to harder stuff, they will make sense even in limited use.
Shrockworks step sliders look like a factory part with superb powder coat. Just make sure you do use all holes as per the instructions (requires drilling one hole on pax front side for proper strength).
Btw, I hit my rear lower control arm bracket skids (esp pax side) on steps and bigger rocks way harder than anything else. Those are cheap skids, too, well worth it.

Is there a true advantage of the kickout? I know the reason for it but I have no intentions of rock crawling my 4runner. The prices are the same for the version with the kickout and without.

I find that it makes a nice step for getting things off the rack

Are these (pictured) sliders or not
Hi,
I've seen these on the road and I wonder if they are steps or sliders...

There's a few different options available and are all port installed for the most part. Mine came with tube steps.

I went for the Rocky Road step sliders. I have to say, I'm not super impressed.
I ordered on June 1, and paid upfront via PayPal. I didn't hear anything more until 7/29 I received a shipping notification. Of course, we were out of town for the week, on vacation. Anyway, it worked out that they were delivered on the second attempt by Fed-Ex. When I opened the box, it contained two step sliders, a ton of packing material, and nothing else. I called immediately, and was told that they would ship out the mounting hardware that day.
Later, when I was looking them over, I noticed the driver's side slider had a big gouge right on the front, obviously had been dropped at some point. Rather than go through a big hassle trying to return/exchange I just decided to get some spray paint at the hardware store, paint over the gouge and mount them since it wouldn't be noticeable once it was on the truck.
Hardware arrived today so I decided to mount them on the truck. Starting with the driver's side, I was only able to get three out of the six holes to line up with the holes in the frame. Both the front mounting holes and the lower rear mounting hole. The middle holes were both so far off that I wound up drilling a new hole in the frame and using a self tapping bolt they supplied for similar issues. I could not for the life of me to get the bolt started in the upper rear mounting hole.
The passenger side went quite a bit smoother with both the upper and lower holes lining up in the front and rear, but the upper hole on the middle mount I accidentally cross threaded and the bolt only went in about halfway the lower hole didn't line up very well and it doesn't have the threaded insert which is why they include the self tapping bolts, but I didn't want to drill another hole.
I primarily wanted these sliders to function as steps and not necessarily as sliders, so I am not too concerned about not having all the bolts in, but I wish I could get the upper rear bolt in on the driver side. I may have to try to slot the mounting hole in the slider a bit, but it will be a pain in the ass.
Edit- I picked up a new Dremel and a 90* attachment and was able to enlarge the hole without removing the slider. So now I have the bolts in both the upper and lower holes on the rear mount, which makes me feel quite a bit better about them. It looks like the rear mounting plate is bent or not square or something but I was able to get the bolt started and snugged down. I shot the bare metal with a little Krylon rust resistant paint before I put the bolt in.
They do look nice though....

I just installed a set of Shrockworks step sliders. I was undecided between these and the angled RSG ( which are angled out from the truck more than most). I went with the Shrockworks for a few reasons. Cost, availability (Instock) and my wife preferred the flat as a step. Customer service was great. Sliders got to me within a few days of ordering. Install took my about 1.5 hours. I would definitely recommend these to anybody needing steps and wanting sliders.

I also posted this on the Slider Recommendations thread.
If you have a 5th Gen, I recommend the 4xInnovations bolt-on sliders ( Welcome to 4x Innovations - Hardcore Toyota Rock Crawling Armor). They are the strongest and best designed sliders for actual use.
I am a licensed Civil Engineer in NC, SC, GA, and AZ and have been doing engineering design for 29 years. When I wanted sliders for my €œnew to me€ 2011 4Runner, I spent 6 months reading and researching everything I could find because I wanted something that was well made, strong, and affordable. I looked at everything from weld-it-yourself kits to save money to bolt-on and, frankly, nothing really compared to the build quality and strength that was evident in the 4xInnovations design. I could tell that these were built the way I would build them and that was what I wanted. You can tell that every opportunity was taken to make them stronger in a way that minimized the stress transferred to the frame rails. Pretty much all of the other bolt-on sliders attach with between 6 and 10 bolts per side, but these use 17 or more on each side. Watch the video on YouTube for more detail at YouTube. There is also a video on installation and a drop test video (which nobody else has done).
My only problem was that the website said 2014-2018 and my 4Runner is a 2011. I bugged Adam at 4xInnovations for about 4 months, sent him photos and measurements, called him and talked about the install, and finally we concluded that the sliders would probably fit my 2011 after all. I placed the order and couldn€™t be happier. Installing them was a breeze (after three coats of bare metal primer and three coats of satin black). I did it myself using a floor jack with a 2x4 to spread the load and the only difficult part was getting the KDSS accumulator pulled away from the frame so I could slip the slider underneath it (it is pretty tight). Once everything was mounted, I added grip tape to the top (12€x2€ 80 grit pre-cut strips from Amazon) and they look fantastic. I attached a couple photos below.

The drop test videos on 4x innovation's website are excellent. I haven't seen anyone else actually do a torture test like theirs..
