hesitation in acceleration

I've encountered a delay in acceleration both from an idle start and when coasting around a highway curve before merging into ongoing traffic. Both resulted in irate fellow drivers and white knuckles on my part. Conditions are dry, normal driving, full tank/half tank gas. Dealership has checked once, no codes and couldn't repeat it. Any thoughts,,,, 10k miles on vehicle, have had this problem 5-6 times.

Bad tank of gas maybe? I know I've experienced a resistance to downshifting when in a higher gear but that's just mostly due to the ECU programming for economy.

The throttle response is slow/sluggish and I understand from the experts on here that it's just how the vehicle is programmed for fuel economy. I had a 2015 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara last week while the 4Runner was getting some paintwork done and I really noticed a difference in response and peppiness.

The 4R is programmed to be reticent to downshift. Upshifts too early, downshifts too late, it's a mpg thing.

You have to learn to prod it with your foot, or drive it in S, and decide the shifting for it.

Normal.

If you leave it in S4 the transmission will shift for you for gears 1 through 4. It doesn't up shift as fast and holds the gears longer. When I want to go into 5th gear I just move the lever.

Pedal travel seems longer but there is no hesitation what so ever if you really put your foot in it. Don't be too shy, give it some gas.
