Many thanks for all the information guys - so far this forum is on par with the big blue forum I used when I had the FJ.

For the MotorHome.. You will want a diesel pusher... Obviously pricey... but worth it in the long run. A MH with a trailer is in my long term plans for sure. They are very much like boats... Huge money pits with stuff constantly going wrong. Just know that going into it.

LoL… Yeah, I kinda figured as much. We have a boat, and been VERY luck with it in 7 years, it's really just been yearly maintenance (oil change & such) and I just got around to replacing one of the impellers, and the other one will be done this summer. Not too bad considering it's 100% salt water use. But I digress…
The 4Runner is double and triple duty for us. It's our family hauler, adventure camping transportation, and our off-road toy. We once put close to 200 miles on our FJ on ONE off roaring trip. Every mile was in the back-country.
It's not at the TOP of the list, but one of the reasons I would go with a trailer, is like Wfo9 said - if I break something, I can trailer it and bring it home or get it to a repair shop easier.
Doing the White Rim Trail and Tower Arches Trail in Canyonlands next year.

Let's resurrect an old thread....
I am very near bringing a friend back from the dark side and getting him into a T4R TE. He has one requirement that it must be able to be flat towed behind his motor home. The owners manual says NO WAY. I've been searching around the interwebs, including this thread, and can't find a technical reason why not other than the manual says not to.
Sine this thread is a couple of years old maybe someone has a definitive reason they can share.

Part-Time Manual Transfer Case with Neutral
We purchased our TRD Off-Road yesterday for flat towing because the transfer case has a Neutral Position. At the dealership I shifted the TC into neutral and ran the tranny through the gears with no motion so why the hell isn't that acceptable for flat towing? I make my living rigging vehicles for dinghy towing and unless the transfer case isn't lubricated by the spinning of the output shaft then there should be no reason that it cannot be flat towed. For the electronic transfer case units, Remco Industries makes a lube pump kit to keep everything wet, assuming you have the A750E or F transmission.

Do Not Flat Tow.
Seems like a blanket "CYA statement" though if the X'fer case has a neutral position. As soon as I learn which case is in it, I will d'load the service manual to investigate how the oiling system is configured, then make a decision from there.

I suppose we'll see you back whining that the dealer denied your powertrain warranty because you knew better than the engineers who designed it.

You will have to install a driveshaft disconnect for the rear driveshaft. They are commercially available. My buddy that I referenced in my earlier post installed one.
I do not know the limitations of the transfer case that will not allow it to spin in neutral, but there definitely is an issue there. I would heed the advice of
@ philsey

Why not just let the engine idle? With transmission and transfercase in neutral. This should provide the lubrication for tranny and transfercase.

This is a good argument for installing an aftermarket transfer case that would allow towing. Think Atlas, etc.
I know, old thread, but had to comment.

Wonder how this all turned out. I also would like to buy a new 4Runner with the manual shift transfer case and flat tow it. Anyone have any new information?

No change. You cannot flat tow a 4Runner. The transfer case oil pump is engine driven. You could possibly remove the rear shaft.

As I ponder retirement In a diesel pusher for a few years.... flat towing the 4Runner is what I want to do. What do I need to do to tow my 19 TRD ORP?
