Anyone run two sets of wheels and tires???

So I've had my 4Runner for about a week now and I'm pretty pleased with the gas mileage it's getting. I'm averaging close to 20mpg which my 08 FJ Cruiser could only dream about.

With my FJ I swapped out the tires to LT all terrain tires which was part of the problem. Now that I have the 4Runner I'm thinking of getting some nice aftermarket wheels and running a more street oriented P all season tire during the summer and then getting some winter tires for the stock rims to use in the late fall and winter months.

I don't really do any hard core off-road driving, bought the 4Runner as a family vehicle so the all seasons will be fine in the warmer months.

I have for my old truck and my wife's van. As long as you have the storage space for the wheels and you don't mind flipping the sets around twice a year, its actually quite beneficial to do it that way.

For my truck, I had a street tire set that I ran most of the time, and if I was heading to the trails, I'd throw the other set on. I found myself not swapping them back over after the trails, as I would keep putting it off. I finally just sold the street tires and only run the 35's on the truck now, but I don't really use the truck for regular driving duty (that's what the 4 runner's for now!).

As for the wife's van, I have a 3-season touring tire set, then I have Blizzaks for winter driving. Because I only swap them out once in late fall, then once more in late spring, its worked out for me quite well. I can also swap them out at the very last minute (ie., snow and/or ice expected in the morning, I swap them out the night before in my garage), rather than having to get an appointment with a tire shop before any snow/ice is expected, as well as having to pay the 40 or 50 bucks to swap them around twice a year.

I should note that I have a large shop on my property with lots of space and air tools, so swapping the wheels over is a 15 minute job for me! If you plan on doing this with a tire jack and hand tools, this may become a pain in the arse for ya!

Jus' sayin'!!!

I run 2 sets. I just got back from a 3 thousand mile trip with no off road involved. I had the stock 20" tires on. Nothing runs as smooth, quiet and gets as good of mileage as a stock tire. I am putting my BFG KO2 tires on today as I have a trip with off road involved soon. On my old 2003 4runner I had the stock wheels got very pitted and torn up from off road use. Now my stock wheels can stay nice and I can trash the off road wheels and not worry about it. I also like changing up the look of the 4runner now and then. I have plenty of room for the extra tires and it gives me something to do changing them now and then. I generally leave the off road tires on most of the year. I do not mind bashing them against curbs and things.

We have a '15 limited and I am about to buy a set of Trail wheels so we can put some more appropriate rubber (stock sizing though) on them for winter use....and maybe the occasional off-road adventure

I always had 2 sets until ~ 5 years ago, now I just got the TRD pro (sema 17) and mounted winter tires on them.
Like was mentioned it gets old making appointments and shelling out $50 and your time, fuel...
If you have a cordless drill, get an attachment that will fit socket heads and a socket (forget if it's 21 or 22mm). Torque by hand after, goes pretty quick.
If your getting nice wheels I'd mount the more aggressive winter treads on them, leave the stock rims for the street tires. JMO.

Thanks for the comments. Looks like I'll be using two sets of wheels, the nice set with street tires for the warm months and the stock set with winter tires for the cold months. Swapping the sets won't be an issue for me as I have the tools to do it myself.

I only have tpms in the stock wheels. On my off road tires I just have a regular valve stem. The low tire pressure light comes on until I pull into the garage and it gets reset from the stock tires being in there. I can drive about 20 miles/20 minutes before the light comes back on again.

I have stock Trail rims with A/T tires on them for daily driving. I've got a bare set of FJ Cruiser wheels that I'm going to eventually put a set of MTs - probably Super Swamper IROK NDs on for offroad trips. Just hasn't made it to the top of my list yet. I have a big garage with a full set of tools - like 60 gallon compressor, air tools, floor jacks etc. so swapping myself only takes about 15 minutes. One of the best things I've ever bought was a 50' spring retractable air reel that's mounted to the wall.

My 4runner so far has exceeded my expectations on capability. It basically has gone everywhere i've pointed it. Probably why I've stuck with A/T tires so far.

See I realize a lot of owners do some real off-road driving but the most mine will see is a drive on beach once or twice a summer. The rest of the time it's back and forth to work. Then in the winter we get our usual hodgepodge of winter weather. It's my daily driver and family vehicle so I don't need any thing but all seasons or dedicated winter tires.

You are probably better off just replacing the tires with some Revos or some other P rated tire when the stock tires wear out and call it good.

I have a set of Blizzaks on FJ Steelies from my time in CO.

Nothing looks more out of place in a Florida beach house than a set of snow tires.

I used to do that with my old 1st Gen T4R. Worked great for me, my main problem was storage for the set not being used and it seemed like every time I needed to buy new rubber, I had to by 8 instead of 4 because they all worn out in the same time frame. Expensive!
