Coilover Backward Compatibility - ie 07-09 FJ Cruiser coilover fit on 5th Gen

Just an FYI - I picked up a set of Fox 2.5 coilovers for a 07-09 FJ Cruiser for a very good price. Fox website said they are the same part and interchangeable for all FJ cruiser and 5th gen. I pulled the factory coil on one side and it was immediately obvious they are not the same.

The upper mount matches as does the length. The difference is the misalignment spacers in the lower heim joint. The 10+ FJ Cruiser and 5th gen 4runner use a 14mm shaft with ~1.5" spacing, where the earlier use a 12mm shaft bolt with 1.25" spacing. So... if you wish to use the early FJ Cruiser coilovers - they are useable, but you'll need to order new misalignment spacers specific to the 5th gen or 10+ FJ Cruiser.

And... Fox customer service folks who answer the phones aren't very knowledgeable about their products. They will tell you with confidence that it's because it is a 2015 and it must be different and they don't have any coilovers that will fit a 2015. The physical catalog is different from the website that lists all of them as interchangeable.

All-Pro knew exactly what was wrong and what I would need to make them work. I actually think a set of 9/16 misalignment spacers would work just fine, but I'll order the correct set.

They cost about $9 each.

And FWIW, I set a timer when I started and it took me just over 1 hour from pulling into the garage to torquing back the lug nuts to tear down both sides and pull one coilover before recognizing the obvious fit issue, and putting all back together. I think the next time once I have the spacers will be under an hour to install, plus the time to setup the height. This is with KDSS BTW. Just thought I throw that out there in case you were wondering how long this should take. If I were a shop I'd probably estimate 2hrs plus alignment.

Just wanted to post an update. I got the spacers a week or so ago. Otherwise the FJ Cruiser Fox 2.5s were very similar. The other key difference was the mounting brackets. The 4runner mounts them vertically where the FJ Cruiser has them along the frame rail. The hose is too short and/or lacking the 90* elbow to fit in the upright position like the 07-09 FJ Cruiser.

I just modified the two brackets to fit the 4runner frame rails. Easy peasy. Non-reservoir models would be very easy to swap in if you find a good deal on them.

I set mine to the absolute lowest possible setting still having enough thread for the top collar to be fully engaged. At that level I was roughly 1" higher than stock, but I have a winch in a hidden mount, so I'm maybe .5" high from stock. That's just where I wanted it.

The ride is great of course. Compared to stock it is slightly rougher on cracks likely due to the lack of rubber bushings, but light years better on larger bumps. Speed bumps are an amazing difference. Haven't been off the pavement yet, but I expect them to perform very well. IMO dampening is nicely tuned for the 4runner weight.
