Swap Rims From Taco to 4Runner
here is the sitrep ...
20x7 rims on a LE and I need new tires. don't want the oem tires as they are ~$300, which I am not even going to entertain that idea.
recently swapped the 2016 Tacoma 17x7.5 oem rims to aftermarket.
I have been reading thru the following 2 threads all morning ...
5th Gen Wheel & Tire Thread
20 inch wheels on LIMITED
and a lot of good info but the options within each are good 3rd choice options.
what I was hoping was to swap the Tacoma rims onto the LE.
Tacoma rim spec :
P265/65R17
17x7.5J
PCD : 139.7 (5.5in)
Inset : 30mm (1.18in)
edit : I think the backspace on the 17 are 5.5 or 4.5 not sure.
from what I can find the 17x7.5J rims that come on the 4runner are :
P265/70R17
17x7.5J
PCD : 139.7 (5.5in)
Inset : 15 (0.59in)
edit : forgot to add the backspace on the 4runer is 4.5 on 20x7 rims, 4.875 on the 17x7.5 rims and 4.5 on the 17x7 rims
from what I can tell all the oem rims have an inset of 15
what I am wondering is, will the Tacoma rim be a plug an play swap ?
or would I have to have a tire shop mount them to see if they clear the calipers on the 4runner.
any insight or help or website you can point me to do more research would be greatly appreciated.
my docs I am using for ref:

Those Sport wheels look better on the 4R than the Tacoma...

You're overthinking this - why not just try sticking them on if you already have the Taco wheels sitting around?

If I'm reading it correctly (this term inset is not standard, but I'm assuming it is the same as + offset). You would have 5.4" of backspacing which is probably too much. You could add 1" wheel spacers and that would put them in the right place.

I would if I had the tools to do it. I am a computer person by trade, not a mechanical person. I tried doing stuff years ago by myself (water heater) and what should have been a $100 swap, ended up costing almost $200 cause I keep screwing up. would have been cheaper just to pay someone to do it right the first time.
I know when its better to pay someone else to do it than for me to try.
as a last resort I can always take it to a shop and have them remove the oem rims and put the Tacoma's on and do a dry fit, but that will cost money. I just want to get my ducks in a row before spending money to confirm my research.
if these rims dont work my next option is to either try some 255/55R20 or 275/55R20, but then I would have to find a shop that would go outside specs of a tire on a 7" rim compared to a 7.5" rim.

Another computer guy here. Trust me - you'd rather be learning how to change a tire in your garage or driveway with ample time then you will in the rain or snow on the side of the highway out of cell service.

so if the taco rims are 17x7.5 / 265-70-17 / 30mm offset
and the 4runner rims are 20x7 / 245-60-20 / 15mm offset
edit : nevermind I found a website to tell me what was noted before, I will need a 1" spacer.

well at least now I can use those 17's from the Tacoma instead of sitting in the shed collecting dust.
throw some std load dura tracs on them and be all set.

You can do it. It is really easy and if you have any issues you can post on this thread. I am sure people would be happy to help and quick to respond. someday you will get a flat. Now go get some practice! You will notice chest hair instantly growing as you start working on your 4runner.

All these people cheerleading, "You can do it!!"... are you talking about simply taking a tire+wheel combo off and putting another on (i.e., same as replacing a flat with the spare on the side of the road), or are you talking about taking a tire off of one wheel and putting in on the other?
If the former, then yeah you can do it. This should be basic knowledge before people are allowed to drive. The kit is in the cargo area on the driver's side behind a removable plastic panel. Wear gloves so you don't get your hands dirty. If you want to make the job much easier buy a cheap electric impact wrench with a deep-well 21mm socket along with a decent floor jack and pair of jack stands. Check for sales at Harbor Freight or Northern Tool. You'll save lots of money over time by rotating your own tires. Much much easier than the plumbing required to replace a water heater.
But if you're talking about taking rubber off one wheel and stretching it over another, that's a whole other story. I've personally done it before, but I had access to a shop with the proper tools. I'd never attempt that in my driveway.
