Persistence and follow up pays off. It has to be done at any dealer.
Nice job !
I have to agree, I bought my T4R because it was quality made in Japan, that means something to me...

rear differential leaking around plug
Hi
I have read the entire thread and it sounds like I have a similar problem. I have a 2014 that I bought new from the dealer. I just noticed a oil spot on the garage floor this past Sunday. From the looks of the dried spot it has been leaking for some time. The drip was on the outside of the weld collar. I could not see anything coming from the actual drain plug itself. I tried to see if maybe the plug was loose but I could not budge it, it was tight, lol. I was able to loosen the fill plug and the level was low. I filled it up, wiped everything off, took it for a drive and left it sit for about an hour and a half. I again noticed wetness around the outside of the collar. I took it to the dealer and informed them of what I had discovered. They left it sit for 1/2 hr and said it was dry. They asked if I can bring it back and leave it for a few hours. I have an appt. for this Friday to do that. It appears after being driven for a while and left parked for a few hours is when it begins to leak. The vent plug at the top of rear does work properly. I purchased the extended vehicle maintenance from the beginning from Toyota themselves and has had it serviced at every mileage that it is called for. I asked the service manage if they had heard of any problems kind and he said no. I will let you know what happens on Friday.

I will respond with my contact info in your PM shortly, but wanted to add some color for the benefit of the forum.
I was told that Toyota made the dealer thoroughly document (incl. pics) the issue and the corrective action. The dealer that sold me the vehicle and did the service/repair under warranty was McGeorge Toyota in Richmond, VA. As documented above, it took me several attempts to get the dealer and/or Toyota to repair the vehicle. I think if you follow the process that I "allowed" the dealer to perform to the vehicle, you would be more than fair. However, given the documentation here, and certainly what Toyota now has in their database via my case, I hope your issue is addressed more efficiently. The vehicle was in the shop for two days for the fix, so be prepared. Good luck and keep us informed.

update, I had my appt. yesterday. I informed everyone I could of the situation,
,ie; service adviser, lady checking me in,she asked, lol, and a ford service manager(who said he would pass along the info to the Toyota service manager who was not there yet). I also informed the service adviser that their was an active drip. Five(5) hrs later they said the vehicle was done and I could pick it up. I asked the Toyota service manager to explain what was done. She told me that they installed a new drain plug and gasket. The service manager asked if everything was ok because I must have had a dumb or weird look on my face. I inquired about the oil that I found on the outside of the collar on the weld and just wanted to make sure every thing was taken care of. It was than that the service adviser walked by and she stopped him. The service adviser told us that he "BELIEVED" the oil was coming from the drain plug so they replaced the plug and gasket. I than asked what he meant by he "believed" it was , and either it was or it wasn't. The service adviser said that they had to "start somewhere". Now the service manager had that look, and it wasn't a nice one. She turned to me and suggested that I keep the vehicle over night and they will give me a loaner. The service manager said that they will drive it around the next day(today) and make sure that the oil that was on the weld was just spray from the leak. The service manager said in the event it is still leaking, I should keep the loaner and they will fix it right away. She also informed me that in the event it doesn't leak anymore, I should continue to monitor it and at the first sign of a leak, I should bring it in and they will take care of it right away. So far the service manager has done everything she could and was very nice, I couldn't ask for anything more. I am hoping that the drain plug gasket and plug is the easy fix. My only concern is the vehicle only has 35,490 miles and so far the rear differential has not been touched for any scheduled service.

well, update. The rear diff. is leaking again. I got into it with the service adviser about the leak two days ago over the phone. He told me that he would like to have the vehicle on a dry day that I might be confusing the oil leak with wetness(water) on the road, I laughed and asked him if he ever touched diff. oil and smelled it. I ended up making an appointment this morning for them to keep it for a few days. When I brought it in, I was glad that there was an actual drip for them to see. The service manager came out and I told her about the issue again. I will skip all the boring stuff about getting into it with the adviser again after he told me that all he sees is moisture. The service manager told me that they will take the vehicle in and place it on the lift and call me back so we all can see. After a 30 plus wait, I see my car parked outside. I inquired as to what is going on and was rudely informed by the adviser after he threw my paperwork on his desk, that "well, your getting a new rear, that's what you wanted right" . I went straight to the service manager to complain. The service manager stated she would take care of the advisers attitude and informed me that everyone witnessed the leak from the weld and a new rear was ordered. The manager told me that they will call early next week and they will need the vehicle for a day or two. I want to thank" twoburgers" for bringing this to light because I firmly believe I was taken care of faster because I had informed them that I heard and know about a potential problem with the weld. My 2014 4Runner SR5 has a little less than 36,000 miles. I am glad that my dealership after three attempts, finally recognized the leak. IMO they recognized it the first time but did the "drain plug gasket" thing. The second time the vehicle was not driven long enough. The service manager appeared to be sincere and said all the right things. By mid next week I should have a new rear and back in my vehicle.

I might have fluid coming from the weld too.
I'll be testing this week. Hoping I'm just being paranoid.

Looks like I may be in same boat
First off I want to thank everyone that post to these forums. They really are a great help especially when things go wrong if you’re not sure where to turn. I noticed a leak in my 2014 SR5 rear differential and brought it to the dealership today. They told me that they replaced the drain plug in the gasket and that should fix the problem. However later this evening I noticed that the drip had returned. Looks like I will be going back on Monday and thanks to this forum I will have additional information (ammunition).

Dealer confirmed that the leak is coming from the weld around the drain plug. They had to call Toyota to determine what the next step of the fix would be and they came back and said they are going to replace the entire differential housing. I did not pressure them in anyway to replace it or repair the weld but this decision is what they came back with after talking to Toyota. Maybe with the previous issues that people had this could be a standard fix? Anyway, thanks to all the posts. The dealer has ordered the parts and just waiting to hear back when I can schedule service.
