Seriously though, my opinion is onboard air is really overkill. Just do a portable it will meet all your needs and cost about 80% less and be way more versatile overall. Onboard makes sense if you have air lockers, but besides that it is along the lines of those 50" light bars in my opinion. Way more than you need. But it is your truck to do with whatever you please ;-)

I like where you're head's at.
I know it's sarcasm, but I've done 3 of the ac compressor setups. The Nippondenso compressors are a tricky PITA to build a proper oiling intake, oil separating output, and return cycle system. But they will probably compress 12-15cfm and make 300+psi. They are an engineering work of art. 10 cylinder sequential compressors with a swashplate crank system and half bearings that drive the pistons. It's pretty freeking amazing what goes on inside them.
We should all be glad that today's 12v compressors are so darn good. It wasn't always this way. I'm pretty sure I'll never do another belt drive version. And I like the portable setup as well. It's easy and convenient. And I can move from vehicle to vehicle if I need to.

Yet one more vote for portable! And I have a Viair 450C-IG in my truck, hard-mounted with a 5gal tank. If it weren't for the front ARB locker (well, that and my air horns!LOL!!!), I would have gone portable, as I only use it for filling tires after a trail run and occasionally using an air tool or air blow gun.
The new ARB CKMTA12 definitely has some impressive numbers, but again, unless you're expecting to use it as an air tool compressor on the trails, and you're gonna run an air locker, this really is overkill, and at twice the cost of the Viair units, I'd just be looking into a portable unit. Be forewarned about that unit too, at full load, it pulls 68 amps of current! You will need to run some good car-audio 4awg cable for that unit to be happy, and without the engine running, you can definitely kill the battery pretty quick!
One other warning, at 60+ amps with engine off, battery will sag below 12v, which will cause an even greater load from the compressor, at 10.5v, you're around 80+amps, and it continues to decrease rapidly as the battery drains.
Just some other points to look at when sizing your compressor. Sometimes bigger isn't actually the better choice.

Another portable vote here too. I have a VIAIR 400P and have used it quite a few times for airing back up with no problems.

I like the portable ones as well. My friend has the arb one and for me to hook mine up and fill my tires it's only maybe a minute or two difference. Probably due to checking the air pressure.
Having one mounted is nice though and save a some room, I wonder if I could just hard wire the portable ac, or if I even should sometimes lol

You should certainly do whatever you like. I personally like having it onboard, without something else to have lying or flying around the cabin. It is also a matter of convenience, I use mine a couple times a month, most of the roads I travel are washboards, not boulder wheeling.
Since everyone recommends you buy a portable, ARB does have a twin portable with the tank included...
CO2 tanks are a good option to if you have the means to easily fill them.

@ Ducmonsta
and I just installed my compressor last week. IMO this is the best way to go about it. Super clean install and takes up very minimal room. The
@ bandi
mount worked out perfect. We installed the air line chuck inside the front bumper so it's easy to get to. I have a black vinyl plug to cover up the chuck to keep debris out of it. Here are a couple pics.

It looks like you have it inside the truck in one picture, is there where it is now? I am searching for a location to mount my 1.5 gallon tank, I would like it to me outside somewhere. Haven't had the time to get under the truck since its still freezing here in NY.

Tank was relocated to the rear. I actually did a set of drawers that I haven't had a chance to write up yet, the tank is in behind one of the drawers
Sorry, not the greatest photo of the tank location, it's behind the passenger side slide out though

Run a Viair portable unit. Just throw the bag in whatever vehicle I take out. Works well for me and friends who need to borrow it.

I use this same compressor. VERY nice for the price. puts out an incredible amount of air. doesn't seem to get too hot, and its not that loud.

Great thanks. Works perfectly there with the drawer setup. I'm at a point where I want to keep the storage area stock right now. Once it warms up a bit more I'll get the tank underneath the truck somewhere.
For all you portable guys, the puma compressor is great for that. I divorced mine from the tank and have to compressor permanently mount at the moment and will be mounting the tank soon. I do a lot of beach driving and having the built in unit is a must for me. Being able to flick a switch and air up is great and also having the ability to blow my feet off is great too.
In my fj80 I have a engine driven York 210 compressor and that thing is a BEAST. 10 cfm all day long at any pressure. At 1800 rpms it fills 33s from 18 to 40 psi in 30 seconds. Tried to go that route in the 4Runner but there is just limited space in comparison. I'll get something developed sometime soon I'm sure.

Another vote for the ARB twin. Mine is firewall mounted. Pics and install description in my build thread.

Have to be careful with mounting below deck. No matter what sort of coating your tank has you will eventually run into rust issues, and unless you have a swing out tire carrier, there really isn't a whole lot of room underneath. I have seen them done behind the front bumper, but underhood or in the cargo area are the best options I've seen.
