eBay for affordable OEM replacement plugs

Just thought I'd chime in mentioning that searching eBay for 90919-01233 turns up packs of 4 plugs for $16. The eBay images show OEM boxes, and one can see Denso SK16HR11 on images of the plugs. I assume they're authentic. One can buy 8 plugs for $32, which is cheaper than buying 6 individual plugs at ~$7.50 per plug. If you order off of eBay, be mindful to scrutinize the listing to make sure the person didn't just put 90919-01233 in the listing to draw your attention. In other words, look at the listing with a mind toward ensuring you're getting the Denso SK16HR11 plug instead of something different.

Really appreciate your work Antman and Gracie!

This thread is still the best. Gonna be employing my 7 year old to do this in 2 weeks.
Grace is 9 now and has been helping me frame the basement in. She made me fix 3 studs last week that she said were “out of plums”. Lol.
She knows how to do brakes now too. If I tell her to go and get me a 3/8 drive 10mm deep well socket she (almost) always gets it right!

God help her future husband.

Follow up on eBay SK16HR11 plugs

A week or so ago I posted that I found four packs of SK16HR11 plugs on eBay for cheap. I wanted to follow up on that! I received the 8 plugs I ordered. I found the gaps ranged all over from 0.03" to 0.044". I measured the gaps using one of the coin-style tools found at the counter of many auto parts stores. (I just walked in and used theirs since I'm obviously cheap.) Going off memory from a few days ago, it was either the 2010 4Runner service manual or the Denso spec that said the plugs should be gapped between 1.0 mm and 1.1mm (0.039" to 0.043"). SO...basically I had to gap the plugs to get them in spec.

On a side note, I read all sorts of people state not to gap Iridium plugs, but I didn't read any clear engineering-based reason why. The closest thing I found to a reason was because the Iridium electrode was brittle. Well, these eBay plugs I ordered needed the gap expanded, which was easy to do without touching the Iridium plated electrode. I simply grabbed some needle nose pliers and bent the ground electrode open a tad bit more. I had zero problems getting them gapped to spec.

There's one more consideration with these cheapo eBay plugs that I want to note. The original 4Runner plugs I pulled out had a very small 'dot' of metal on the ground electrode. The 'dot' was directly in line with the center electrode. The dot effectively reduces the gap between the ground and center electrodes when they're directly in line with each other. However, on the cheapo eBay plugs, the dot of metal on the ground electrode was noticeably offset on the center electrode I realized this after I gapped the plugs and then questioned whether I made the gap too big. I installed the plugs anyway and the vehicle runs smooth after a basic test drive.

I'll say the cheapo eBay plugs visually looked identical to the original plugs in all other ways though. The Toyota / Lexus packaging is the cherry on the top that began to convince me the product is legit.

Overall, the point of my follow up is that the eBay plugs might be knock off products though. I don't have much experience with plugs, so I don't know if it's normal to see things like gaps ranging from 0.03" to 0.044" and an odd 'dot' on the ground electrode, which is also offset from the center electrode.

Buyer beware.

Grace should charge $125 / hr for vehicle work

Ohhhh, and I meant to mention that it sounds like Grace is capable enough to begin making money on vehicle maintenance! I'd suggest charging more than the standard'ish $100/hr rate since she's clearly not the average mechanic. Having one's vehicle serviced by a adorable 9 year old deserves a premium! ;)

One thing I would just like to add, get a vacuum cleaner and suck the dust/debris around the coils first before taking it out. Awesome post btw, much appreciated

This is a great tutorial, but there’s an amended procedure for 2014+ 4Runners due to needing to remove the air injection pump. Courtesy of @[email protected]

I’ve had this thread saved since day one and I’m finally ready and have enough miles to change my plugs!

Question-
It looks like my 2010 calls different plugs than the later models... are they all interchangeable, are the later ones better for whatever reason, or should I just use what Toyota originally spec’d?

Thanks all!

ETA- per the stickied maintenance thread:
Toyota part # 90919-01233/DENSO SK16HR11 ('14-'16) or
Toyota part # 90919-01191/DENSO SK20HR11 ('10-'13)
