Vinyl wrapped roofs
Hello,
I'm in prep for a Gobi rack and have read several posts about the wind deflector rubbing the roof. To combat this I planned on doing a vinyl under the rack. I would like to do the whole roof black as I think it would look good with the super white. Would anybody car to show off their rig with a wrap?! I would appreciate it.
Cheers!

Solve your potential rubbing problem & save yourself a couple hundred bucks...

no need for a vinyl wrapped roof. no can see that it will be black anyway, it's on the roof.
clay the roof and put a good sealant and/or wax down before the rack install and you're golden.

If you have constant rubbing from your rack, a vinyl wrap will NOT hold up to that type of abuse. And neither will 3M or any other brand of clear bra material either, these materials are just not made for isolating friction of any sort.
Yes, clear bra materials will protect your vehicle if a rock hits it, but if you continuously hit it in the same spot, eventually it will wear through the material.
Also, doing a black vinyl wrap on the roof will make the interior hotter, just like a black paint job will make the interior hotter than a white paint job, and unlike paint, no matter what vinyl you use, if you're not able to keep it clean, it will eventually fail.
Remember, without any care at all, vinyl wraps are only good outdoors for 5-8 years only, and that is reduced due to horizontal stability of the product. Basically, if its installed on a horizontal surface, the elements, such as acid rain/dew will reduce its life, especially if you are unable to keep it cleaned and polished.

Thank you for the information, gave me a lot to think about leading up to the install. This place is a vast source of knowledge. Again, thanks for taking the time to help out, much appreciated.

I never installed my wind deflector, i thought it was of poor quality. Also it is flimsy to say the least. I gave no noise issue at 100mph. So my advice is junk it.

Dude. I have a super white SR5p AND a gobi on order AND I wanted to vinyl wrap my roof black for the protection and ease of maintenance (& less water spots issues) BUT I have decided against it. All these people are right. A good base layer of protection and then a wax on top of that will offer a lot of protection. And you can put a strip of 3m tape on top of that too for even more protection.
I suggest an "opti coat" and then a synthetic wax on top of that... 2 layers of durable protection and then tape should keep your roof in good shape.

Diggin the opticoat, I'll be trying to get a quote tomorrow. From what I read it's pricy, but worth it!

I recently wrapped my hood.... I have a front runner on my roof, and although the wind deflector doesn't cone in contact with the roof at all, I did it more for a bit of protection, etc....
I know it won't last forever, but redoing it in 4-5 years is worth it for me... wrapped the hood a couple months ago, and now the roof.

Travo60, don't pay anyone to apply opti coat. If you buy the "optimum gloss coat" the formula is easy enough to apply for anyone of any skill level & it's only $60. You apply it just like a wax, easy on & then wipe off. No need to pay a detailed to do this. I would also recommend clay barring first too. Claybar is also easy and cheap

Never understand the appeal of matte black on your cars. It looks like its unfinished to me. Job well done though.
Also another note. Don't tint tails. Why would anyone want to DECREASE brake light visibility? After getting rear-ended in mine, I wouldnt want to impede anyone's visibility of my lights.
