Has the TRD Skid Plate changed over the years for GEN 5? Specifically, would this skid plate fit a 2023:

That's a lot of money for a weak skid plate. My 3/16 is severely bent in one spot (I mean the entire pax side front half) and its internal mid-plate supports are both bent, and I have replaced the rear bolts a bunch of times and had to rehread one of the holes.

If you are seriously offroading, by which I mean carrying any speed over rocky terrain or sliding, dropping on skids and sliders, you will want steel. If you are not, I think you can do just fine on the stock one. My Moab friend is still using stock on his GX 470 though he is slow. My 2c.

This is going on my wife’s 20233 Off-road that’s been ordered, but not allocated. 95+% highway driving and she’s not hard charging rock gardens.

Thanks for the hardware suggestion, but the Saker stud-mounting is the only way to go on these.

Lots of people complain about the OEM TRD skid plate, but it has one big advantage over any other skid plate I have seen: the front rises almost to the the bottom of the front bumper. Everybody else mounts to the cross beam which is well below the front bumper.

I put one on my 2023 ORP a few months ago. Fit fine. Used the provided hardware (2 bolts). Needed to reuse 2 bolts iirc.

What is the "Saker stud mounting" you are referring to?

Thanks

Something you do with your wife/ GF (or both at the same time) in the confines of your bedroom, or tent, or the side of a remote hiking trail or by a cool mountain stream...sorry got carried away.

jk...its where you replace the bolts with studs as some ham fisted mechs tend to strip the threads in the frame or lose the spacers that go in the front bolts or place them in the back position. anyways, makes removal more idiot proof.

link anyone

You know I’m working down at my home in SoCal, while my wife is busy playing retirement at our ranch in Montana. It’s hard to ignore a
stud mount threesome in a tent at the moment. I am thankful for the distractive review I am working on.

I am not aware of any changes to the mounting of the skid plates....
mine fit perfectly on my 21 TRDORP.
May also want to chase thread holes prior to stud mounting. Chasing the threads and the stud mounting projects are both easily done and will possibly save you some heartache as well.

For the one that states the plate is weak, I have a much different opinion.

My 14 T4R had one on it. One morning at approximately 3 AM on the way to work after a hurricane passed thru our area. I encountered a 20" Dia utility pole across the roadway. Had been raining, road was dark, lights out because pole had pulled the wires down with it, pole was dark & blended in with the roadway and I encountered it at enough speed to send me over to top of the pole and landed my T4R on the other side about 10 or more feet...(didnt measure)
Impact deployed all air bags but the passenger side front.
If it were not for the TRD skid plate, IMHO, the impact would have pushed both front tires into the cab area. Why didn't it, because the TRD Skid Plate started raising the front end up before the tires impacted the Utility pole and started my T4R in an upward motion to go over the pole.
Possibility that I could have had broken leg or legs if I didn't have a TRD Skid plate on my 14".
I was able to push the door open and walk out!

YMMV
