Smashed tail gate on garage door / Why can my wife NEVER be on time?!

Son of a .....

Trying to get out of the house this weekend... It happened. Wife was running late as usual. I was sitting in the driver's seat of our 2016 T4R trail premium waiting and losing my patience. She went back into the house to get, god knows what this time and left the tail gate open. Somehow the idiot driving looked back and assumed she had closed it and proceed to slowly reverse out of the garage. Well the tail gate was not closed and I caught the damn top of the garage door on the plastic surround on the tail gate. Completely smashed it, camera and all. DAMNIT!!

I'm thinking I can save the tail gate and maybe just get a dent removal guy to pop out the sheet metal and replace that busted surround. Didn't we have a dealer on here somewhere that was giving members great deals on parts?

You're an idiot, and it's your wife's fault? Riiiight.

I think my 4R has an alarm when a door is open and I put it in gear.

Would've been a better story if you'd just left the wife part out. BTW, I've done the same thing .... twice. Once I drove into our parking garage with a bicycle on the rack, and another time/vehicle with my gate open. My excuse is I'm old.

Well, I would have appreciated more I guess if there was some helpful info as well.

A few years ago, said wife ran two carbon fiber road bikes into the outside of the garage with her then brand new Outback. Smashed the roof rails, crunched the tail gate, destroyed the bike racks and totaled about $6000 in nice Trek roadbikes. Oh and punched 3 holes in the outside of the garage. I guess we're even.

My Ortho surgeon did the exact same thing with his Infinity a few years ago. Wife opened the tail gate and went in the house to grab something... Same thing. He said he was getting impatient and backed up knowing full well the tail gate was up, but just being absent minded. I'll have to go talk to him, I need a cortisone shot anyway.

If you can figure out how to get your wife to be on time, please let me know. Maybe even make it a sticky.

It's simply amazing that 99.999% of the accidents reported on this forum are caused by wives.

Do 4Runner owners have some kind of propensity to marry careless women? Maybe an institution of higher learning could study this phenomenon.

Or could there be another explanation...

I wonder if there are chick forums where fashion fails, hairdo disasters and big butts are all blamed on men.

I guess lucky me that I cannot open the rear hatch when in the garage or it will hit something (doesn't matter if the garage door is open or closed).

I can't open it inside either or it will hit the top of the garage door surround. I have a piece of foam in the rear of the truck that I toss up on top of the door when I open it while inside the garage. Kind of a good thing it was there or it could have been a lot worse. I need to just install that dang tether thing I've seen in a thread around here. I was actually thinking about doing it Saturday then got distracted doing other things. Dang it.

I use the old tried and true method of telling her a time 1/2 to 1 hour earlier than what we really need. Sometimes works.

In this particular case, we didn't have a set time, we were just trying to get out of the house. I waited about 45 minutes for her until she told me I should start getting ready. I got ready, went down stairs and said I'm ready to go.. Of course all progress had stopped and she was "ready" except for getting dressed, getting the baby stuff together, getting her water. Grrrr. I got in the car and loaded our daughter into her seat which is in the center of the rear seat and turned the car on to run the AC. Wife went around back to toss something in but didn't put the gate down, then ran back into the house to get something. I was just being absent minded and crunch.

It's actually the place where too many people keep the stuff that they just can't bring themselves to throw out.

You guys figure that one out, I will make it a sticky on Google's search page...

I have figured out many complex solutions in my professional career but I doubt Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking and Sheldon Cooper working together could figure that one out. After 34 years I have determined my wife runs on football time. You know, the last two minutes of a game that actually takes 30 minutes? Football time.
