One of the most essential wiring tools
Hi tech-team,
Over the last few months I've noticed that there's been a massive upsurge of future auto-electricians here on this forum, where a bunch of guys are rollin' up there sleeves and taking on some of their own electrical projects, and I'm ecstatic about that! So I was thinking... if some of these guys are planning to do some (or all) of their own electrical work, they're gonna need the tools of the trade! One of the best investments that an electrician can make would be the wiring diagrams of the equipment that they're servicing.
Now my job is servicing large commercial & Industrial HVAC equipment e.g., Chillers, Boilers, Build-up hot deck/cold deck, facility environmental control systems. And I'd say... 80 to 85% of the calls that I receive are electrical system related; which means I'm constantly trouble-shooting these electrical panels that are there to run the cooling/heating machinery, so I depend on the wiring plots and data sheets that display how the equipment is engineered. So the electrical library that I've built up over the years is like ultra important for me to have.
I have also, over the last few years, become quite fond of the Mitchell Manuals that I use here on the forums to help folks when their 4Runner has electrical issues. They're not expensive; compared to the service rates that you'd have to pay an electrical shop to wring out a problem for you... think about that! So far, all of the prints that I've seen are totally accurate and easy to follow so I can get done studying in a very reasonable amount of time. Here's what I have below:
The 2014 4Runner Limited is about to expire but I won't renew it because I have the 2015 4Runner Limited! BTW: I chose to buy the limited version because that's what I drive, but it still contains all of the wiring schemes that the SR5 and Trail use and I've never had to walk away from a problem on this forum due to a lack of information in the four and a half years that I've been a member here. Now below I've posted a screenshot of the prices e.g., 1 month, 1 year, and 4 years for you to see.
I just renew once/yr but as you can see, I've needed to carry more than the one for my '12 truck because I wanted to be able to analyse the late model trucks as well, so I recently purchased the 2015 prints; the 2016 isn't out yet so I'll depend on the 2015 sheets for now... nothing substantial has changed since 2010 anyway!
I know there are some here who claim NOT to be electrically inclined and don't feel comfortable with wiring; I get it... it's not for everyone! But there are some here who I know can figure out most anything, so they have NO EXCUSE lol! If you do decide that having your own electrical manuals would be a good idea, be sure to get the PRINTABLE VERSION because none of these documents are transferable; meaning that you can't 'COPY/PASTE' them so you cannot upload them to your photo albums here like some of your other photos.
But... you can PRINT them, which means you can scan them into your desktop, upload them to a site like Photobucket and convert them into a photo format. Then they can be copy/pasted into your posts on this forum; that's how I've been doing it. I don't upload them directly to this forum, basically because I can't control the size when I've done it that way, and I hate when someone posts a photo so large that you everyone else here has to scroll to the right just to read the OP's dialog! The other reason that I no longer upload pics here is because my photo gallery gets full pretty fast and then I run out of room... you can have only a certain amount of pics per album so I've had to delete some of my photos so can add new ones.
I'm bringing these documents to you because I want you to have the tools to trouble-shoot some of your own electrical trouble; you'll never be able to find a short circuit, an open circuit, or a shunt w/o the prints to your truck, and you already know if you're gonna do any more wiring mods on the truck you have now... so if you are, wouldn't it be nice if you could find your truck's trouble just by looking at a map of your electrical system(?) ...just something to think about, but many of you guys are really good at investigating electrical issues... I'm hoping that this thread will be inspirational to at least a few of you,
rig, 'Best'!

Well said and good info. I'm just getting started on my new truck and knowing where to get electrical help is always good.

So far I've gotten away without a paid resource... there isn't a single piece of information I haven't been able to find yet that some savvy google searching didn't yield.
That said, if you do enough work to warrant buying, then its obviously worth the price.
Regarding no copy/paste... if its on your screen, you can have it. Just screen shot the screen, or use the Snipping tool in windows and paste it to whatever you want.

I've got a "Print-to-pdf" utility that I find quite handy.

I don't mean to take this thread off course. What's provided by the OP is good information. Mitchells has good wiring diagrams. Alldatadiy.com wiring diagrams are not bad as well.
But...if you are a diy type and looking for repair info other than wiring diagrams from either of these companies - beware. The following is a cut-n-paste from Mitchells diy. You'll find similar shortcomings in alldatadiy as well:
WHAT'S NOT INSIDE !
Before purchasing, please take a moment to read what is not currently covered in Mitchell 1 DIY. This product is designed for the "Car Savvy" auto enthusiast and deals only with the mechanical repair and service. The following subjects are among those currently not aligned with the intended use of this product and are therefore NOT covered:
Body & Collision Repairs, Headlight / Tail Light Replacement. Windows & Regulators. Door Panels, Locks & Latches. Mirrors, Glass, Wipers, Filters R & I, Spark Plugs and Wires R & I, Radiators & Thermostats R & I, Non-Standard Parts.

Good commercial for the manuals. Hope this gets you a free one.
Did not know about these, thanks for posting and your prior help. I will be getting a subscription thanks to your info.

I think the general accepted method is to go until a fuse pops,
and then post on t4r, waiting for rigtec's help.

Thanks gang...
for all the support in the above posts, it's much appreciated! In my haste I neglected to post up a link to the Mitchell website: Mitchell Manuals
PS: Just in case you were thinking that the 'mitchell Manuals' have only their wiring diagrams, that's certanly not the case! I was interested in their wiring prints but there is so much more here; too much info to talk about so I'm posting the 'Choose category page':
Above are the category subjects that my manuals came with so I can access all of the above data as I need it! I hope this will be helpful! Once again, thank you for all your support,
rig, Cheers

How is any of this stuff different than just having the Toyota service manual?
The PDF manual I have for my 4th Gen includes wiring diagram and the service manual for pretty much everything from bumper to bumper.

I don't know that they are different; I offered the 'Mitchell Manuals' because that's what I use and am very comfortable with them... I've never seen the Toyota manuals so I can't endorse them, but I'll assume that they cost more than $26 bucks/yr(?)
cheers

I have never used the links above but found the Toyota FSM and wiring diagrams to be top notch. I thought this thread was going to be about a multi meter

Haha! ...a multi-meter won't help you if you don't know what you're looking for or where to look! lol

Best Tool
The best tool is using good judgment and knowing where to look for an answer when you have a question. By the way, this forum is very helpful. Thanks to those who contribute.

Out of curiosity, why not just buy access to TIS for a day or two? I know it's more expensive than doing a yearly subscription, but you should be able to see the same EWD I see on the tech side.
