MTS / offorad Settings for deep sand
Friends,
I'll be going to do the Matagorda, TX Seashore tomorrow. 30 miles of beach driving, fishing, and fun. I've been trying to figure outt exacttly what settings to use on my 4x4, and looking for some deep sand experience.
My plan was 4lo with MTS in the Mud, Sand, Dirt setting. If I get stuck, I can use A-TRAC instead, and lock the rear diff, and if that doesn't work I can use crawl control to work my way out.
My understanding is A-TRAC works like MTS on the highest setting, and stops wheel slippage more. Having the MTS in sand will allow for a little more wheel spin.
Does that sound like a good plan to everyone? It's my first time with a system like this.

4hi and 18 psi in the tires. Bring a shovel and a board to place under your jack.

You should be fine in Matty in 4hi all the way past the shell banks.
Go try all the settings out and get a feel for what they do.

I was going to take 2031 to beach road, and just head east when it dead ends off the sand. I've never been out there before, anything in particular I should look out for? I've been looking at it on google earth satellite and it looks like there are a bunch of trails and stuff that go through the dunes.

generally yeah, 4-hi
if the sand is sufficiently deep and soft enough that you don't get movement until you get a lot of revs then all the sudden your wheels spin, then you might want 4-lo to better control your torque output. If you do find yourself in that situation you have to go easy or the extra torque from 4-lo will just bury you. basically, always use the highest gear you can.
i use MTS-sand, a-trac could be too agressive

Will MTS work in 4hi? I was under the impression it would only work in low range.
Part of this journey is the first time I'll get to go offroad and learn how all this stuff works so thanks for humoring my stupid questions.

You can play around with all the settings and see what each does. In reality for most beach sand is drop the tire pressure, put it in 4HI and go. It's not complicated.

RTFM
look at the chart on page 254
Mud&sand can be activated in 4hi or 4lo, the others are 4lo
you must be going < 7mph to activate

What he says. Been driving Bodie, Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands beaches in NC for decades and almost never need 4LO. The real key is to air down to about 18-20 psi depending on load.

Nothing really to worry about, except to watch out back in the dunes and bayside trails. The ground can be deceiving and you could end up frame deep in soft mud in the blink of an eye. (Take recovery gear)
Watch where you walk back on the dunes as well - I've seen a few rattlers back there.

Sand is a good place to try the other settings as stated above.
I use MTS and 4 Low in the soft stuff to reduce the engine load. I usually air down to 15 and avoid quick or sharp turns. When I use the locker in sand it feels like it causes more slip and on a side incline I have had it cause the rear to slide sideways so I leave it off most of the time.

If you are travelling with a group, intentionally get yourself good and stuck and then see if crawl control walks you out of it and then post the video
I've been waiting for winter when the beach is quiet so i can try it out myself without causing a traffic jam for annoying rednecks on squatted trucks run LED bars during the daytime
