N2Advnture's Custom Cell Phone Mount

I'm not a fan of mounting a $1,000 cell phone on the vent so that hot air can blow on it. So, for a long time I've been using this:

My first world "problem" is that every time my wife and I go for a ride, we battle over the 1 drink holder. Not really a battle since I always let her have it and I cramp my beverage in the driver's door.

A lot of the time, my drink won't fit in the door. So, I came up with an idea for a custom cell phone mount.

Here it is:

First I made a cardboard template of the design I had in my head.

Then I found "Structural fiberglass channel" online and cut it with a Dremmel.

I bought a second mount and ripped it apart until I had the piece that I wanted.

I drilled the base and epoxied in an M6 x 1.0 stud using JB Weld's highest strength epoxy.

Then I cut the stud down to fit into the hole where mount will, well, mount to the fiberglass channel.

It wasn't sitting flush so I cut away the excess epoxy.

I used a 1/4" washer on top and below the stud and used a lock nut to hold the mount to the fiberglass channel.

I then painted it flat black to match the interior flat black.

To mount, I used 3M automotive adhesive tape. I thought I would have to add a screw on each end of the fiberglass channel but so far, so good.

Test fitted it, peeled the tape and firmly pressed down to adhere the adhesive.

Might be the best mod I've done so far LOL

The only down side is if you have large hands, when you shift into gear my hand rubs the charging cord when it's plugged into the phone.

Next, I'm going to pull the console and run the charging cable from the USB charger within the center console and come up at the mount and zip tie it to the mounting arm.

I like it, I have seen off the shelf mounts that accomplish very close to the same thing but never using that channel. Will keep this in mind for future options

I've seen those but they seem to be easily bumped by the passenger

Maybe a Steelie is an option for those without fabrication experience?

I've never really fabricated anything. Just gave it a shot.

I've tried to use a Steelie twice but they always feel off and the thick bump on the back of the case sucks
